Thursday Afternoon 10/4

Right now, it looks like I am going to be off Thursday afternoon, so I’m planning on putting in about 2 and fishing a few hours.

Anyone off then and wants to go, just let me know.

That boat in the background of the last pic looks sweet. But they didnt like his spoon i heard..

Tim how are u fishing your spoons? Think i may be using the wrong technique. I have been using a saltwater vertical jigging technique. I think it may be a little too fast for striper in murray. When the screen looks like this but wont bite something is wrong.
You can see my spoon falling right unto them in the upper left hand corner

I mostly just vertical jig, but sometimes if they are stacked up pretty good I’ll just drop it down below them and steadily reel in through them and then drop it back down and repeat.

What kind of spoon you using? I usually use a 2 or 3 oz hopkins spoon, but I’m sure there’s a bunch that work. I’m not sure how much it really matters, since I’ve caught them tying directly to the line also, but I do add a split ring to my spoons. I think it gives them a little beter action than when tied directly to the line.

I tried to talk Crabjack out of his crippled herring spoon, but no luck there… lol so I have a couple of them on order I should get any day.

Looks like a great day! I’m going out Sunday morning,(hoping the cold front doesn’t turn them off). Any expert tips for a still learning novice? Areas to start looking, types of plugs, spoons? I’ll be picking up some live bait too.
Thanks in advance, Bob

@Murraymaker - I believe Fogman might be giving a presentation on fishing with spoons at the Midlands Striper Club meeting next Tuesday. Ditto what Striperskiff said. Split rings or a snap swivel with a wide gap to allow more action in the spoon. I’ve also found that sometimes they can be stacked up like they were on your sonar but they’re inactive so I try for the reaction bite and “power reel” the spoon straight up through the school or a fast crank, crank, crank…pause…crank, crank, crank, etc. Many times they will jump on it the first crank after the pause.

Bob, are you a member of the Midlands Striper Club? If not you should be. That’s the best advice I can give you. I’ve learned a ton from these guys. The meetings are open to the public so if you just want to check it out first, you’re more than welcome. Next meeting is this Tuesday at the Flight Deck Restaurant in Lexington 7:00pm.

Crabjack,
I was a member a couple of years ago, but after I closed my shop down, I had to get a real job, Unfortunately I work nights, so it’s impossible for me to go to the meetings. I wish I was able to go, but oh well, job comes before fishing.

Thanks again Tim for by far my best striper fishing trip to date.I Caught em on spoon, live bait and on the way back in top water.Broke back rebel on my bass rod 6ft uglystick med.Got to be some kind of slam right?First time fishing a spoon I noticed once we found the right depth on the fall i would bump the slack out of the line just a little ended up getting several on the 2ounce hopkins silver spoon. What a blast!!!

I went up and fished the river split just to see if any striper made it up there yet. Didn’t see any schooling or anything that looked like striper on the FF. But I marked some huge catfish and finally caught one, 34" Blue.
