Tigress 1/16/11 - RECORD SNOWY GROUPER

This trip had a lot to do with NMFS/NOAA closing 240ft and deeper at the end of the month and the anti fishing folks.

Wanted to do something we rarely do but will soon be prohibited from doing, regardless, as recreational fishermen.

I am pretty tired right now. So I will be back later with the whole story and more pics.

This should do for now:

That’s a funny looking blackfin.

Good job young grasshopper.

What is the official weight??

Do we have a new record holder?

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

Ah yes.

How shall I recount yesterday’s activities?

We were going to go Saturday, but I decided to hang out with my wife instead. I believe I was rewarded in more ways than I expected…

Let everybody know Friday night the trip was off- rescheduled for Sunday. Everyone was still game, and I threw out the possibility of some swording right after dark. Everyone was even more game.

The plan was to piddle around in shallow water as the ocean got calmer and then be out deep in the afternoon. Wanted to catch some endangered snowy grouper and then a sword once it got dark. Decided against the last part once certain things had occured. Why be greedy?

We cleared the rocks at 10:30ish in the morning.

Really did see Greenpeace in the harbor.

Then we were met by this as Enter Sandman came on the stereo. I sent a pic of the ocean to a few people, and scootin replied, “Something going to die today…”

So we got to a little spot to get warmed up on the C bass. C bass bit good for a bit then the bailing slowed as the current swung. Had to wait on it to do whatever it was going to do, so I started counting what we had. Half way to a 4 man limit. Current made up its mind, and I drug around on another piece I’d seen. Got the last half quick.

Got this too though.

A mule- or near to it. I am sure glad these rare and endangered larger fish are totally prohibited for no rational reason. I’d better get back on topic… sorry.

We headed out deep next. Made pretty good time. Got almost to the first area and saw tuna and bonita. Put out a little trolling spread and hooked up on a bonita immediately. Chris complained about reeling it in for some reason. hmmmmmm

Decided to quit fooling with that and refocus on soon-to-be-illeg

Awesome fish! I thought that was your thumb in the picture before I realized it was a foot!

Way to end an era!! It pisses me off that we can NEVER fish for these great fish again. Tilefish, Snowies, Yellowedge all are plentiful, but nobody is fishing for them.

Great job Wes. You made us proud!

Nice fish!

awesome report Phin. I think that story put alot of smiles on peoples faces

Yo Phin, just picked up on something in your picture.

The fish weights 30.2 pounds POINT 2 POUNDS is 3.2 ounces

Your fish is ZERO POINT 8 ounces away from being a new state record. 0.8 ounces

Did he cough up anything once he got to the surface? Did you keep him wet and cold on the way in? 0.8 ounces is not much weight… Just over of and ounce.

We are talking about holding the SC state record snowy grouper for the rest of our lives… Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren… A legend!

Just look how long the old record has been in place…

NICE FISH! Congrats on the day!

Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!

A few small crabs were in the fish’s gill rakes when it came up, and I shook a few pieces of ice off him when I took him out the cooler to hang on the scale.

I thought an official “tie” would still get into the books.

???

The fish is a tie for the record even though it is actually 3.2oz heavier than the existing record.

Not much more I can do at this point.

The state record red porgy is 10lbs, btw. The one in the pic above is a little over 8lb. Biggest I have seen non-commercially caught.

People who don’t know anything about real offshore fishing have joined with perverted (by big energy money and big catch share money) anti-fishing interests to take all this away from us.

Believe it or not, this spot where we were fishing is next to impossible to fish recreationally 9 days out of 10. It is NATURALLY PROTECTED- something the govt cannot understand. There are columns of 15-25lb snapper and wads of big grouper out there in this kind of structure that hook and line CANNOT get to 99% of the time because we have this cool thing called the GULF STREAM CURRENT flowing year round! We hit it at the perfect time when the bait could get to a couple fish, and look what happened. Snowies do get bigger, and they’ve been caught bigger. They just haven’t been caught with sportfishing gear.

Wes, save the head from the big porgy, would be cool to have DNR pull the otiliths and age the fish.
