I could hardly stand it after the epic grouper bite last trip. Debated on going again Saturday and Sunday, but chose to shrimp Saturday and fish Sunday. Got a cooler of shrimp and hit the bed to rest up for more grouper snatching.
Got up at 4AM and couldn’t go back to sleep. Don’t you hate it when you can’t sleep due to excitement? Watched TV and ate some grits while the time passed. 6AM comes around and Circle Hook hasn’t shown up yet. Not like him at all so I call him up and ask him if he’s scared of being too hot on a day with no wind or what.
We got to the ramp only about 30 min late though, and I knew that 30 minutes would be motivation for Circle Hook to produce later on. I’d forgotten the bean bags too. We would not be dissuaded, however.
More able-bodied crew joined us at the ramp. Sundancer and the artist formerly known as P-murda jumped in the boat, and we ran out the harbor towards the bait spot.
P-murda and Circle hook proceeded with the bait making, and we were back on schedule due to flat seas.
Ran out a few more miles to drop on a little spot with dead bait. First drop put in four 2lb+ C bass. Went up to drift it again and found the B liners as well. Set up over the B liners and limited on 2-4 pound B liners and C bass in 30 or 40 minutes. It’s tough when you start catching 4lb fish and youve already got a 4 man limit of the species in less than an hour of fishing. We will do our part though. Speaking of doing our part, we had to let a 15lb ARS go. I asked if the crew wanted to catch and release some more because they were certainly showing themselves in a few spots on the sonar. What do I know though, the government says they couldnt have been there, and some other highly respectable fishermen say I cant tell ARS from amberjacks on the sonar. We left the area instead of testing snapper speculation.
Great report. I think I saw you guys out there in about 120 feet of water. Water was real green. I was in a teal scout. Anyways if you guys have a spot hit me up. Hell we can even take my boat if you want.
Congrats Phin. Guess it goes without saying that that was the biggest hogfish I have ever weighed in or seen for that matter around SC on ice. Still amazed at how easily you got that 6# downtrigger ball into his/her vent! HAHA, jk man. Congrats
