Tire Reef Sunday 5/31/15

Headed out to Tire Reef on a beautiful , calm Sunday morning. Along for the ride was Larry Page and his son Johnathan Page, whose wife is expecting twin girls in August. His fishing days will be limited soon:smiley: JP’s trusted fishing companion Tybee also came on this trip. There were 3 or 4 boats on site when we arived, including Capt. Rodney on the charter vessell Miss Carolina. He had already caught and released 2 cobia( good on ya!) and 2 snake kings. After setting our live bait rods we concentrated on catching large spadefish. They were plentiful and loads of fun on light tackle. We had to pull up our bottom lines since the spadefish would circle the boat numerous times- causes lots of tangles. We caught about 10 and brought 7 to the dock. We could have hooked more but the crew was wore out with these great fighters. Capers, our new golden retriever puppy, was seriously eyeing the catch at the dock. He will soon join us when he gets a lttle bigger.

We had two cobia hit out top water menhaden but both came free . We also caught numerous small sharks, blackfish, spanish, ringtial and had acouple unknown fish make long runs on the bottom- probaby large sharks. Highlight of the day were two 6.5 to 7.0’ Tiger sharks swiming near the boat for 15 or 20 minutes. One took a top water bait with a “Jaws” approach , with head out of the water in spectular fashion. We locked down the drag to break him off as soon as possible. Saw one other cobia landed by Capt. Rick Hilton

Nice smooth ride home. Thanks to JP for pulling the anchor ( several tiimes) , cleaning fish, etc. It is nice to have a young buck around to help out. Great trip:sunglasses:

ps. Had fried spadefish tonight-great eats!
