I didn’t think you could delete a thread after there were replies? that has to be done by admin right?

I haven’t gone anywhere. I edited the thread title asking it be deleted…Too many negative attacks. And no respect for asking only permit holders reply. And the administrators obliged…

Obviously I jumped the gun somewhat OK a lot…When I saw the maps I imagined oyster Dynasties and corruption. I was researching every day…What really made me delete the topic was I discovered that the total"reported" annual oyster harvest in the entire state is only 100,000 bushels!!! To all you oyster pickers, well I have a great respect for you guys now…And for all those who genuinely tried to explain things,I appreciate the input. And for all you nitpickers, seems you still enjoy picking.

As for “blowing up an inbox” I was only replying to a received private message that was insulting on a personal level. I should have just deleted that.
As for the poles??? That was a genuine concern no matter how it was perceived…What was really amazing was all the negative ■■■■■■■■. I guess feet were stepped on because there was a lot of squealing. If the shoe fits “wear it”.
As for all the pole protectionists here , Rake the existing beds,Place approved cover materials in barren areas, and place your poles in unpopulated areas with puff mud (if you really want to do a good job helping increase the oyster population).
It was indeed silly of me(stupid to some)to get upset about a few poles.I did learn a lot about oysters and the members here(good and not so good).
I plan to be here, post positive information that helps newcomers ,receive information that helps me and address concerns.Need help, just ask,If you already know it all, help others.
Good day to all!

I apologize if I insulted you by saying “you can’t really be this stupid”

You see, when realitivly unknown posters such as yourself come on CF.com and start making bold outlandish statements like you did about a way of life that we all love and respect…well you deserve the responses you got. Hopefully you learned a lot in your internet research and can apply that to finding you a new fishing area. I’m truly sorry you lost one of your productive spots; I’ve had spots of mine messed up by others too. It’s annoying to say the least. It takes a big man to admit when he’s wrong; you’re ok in my book.

Please come, everyone is welcome no matter what their opinion is. We’re all friends at the oyster roast.

Nobody knows it all, but forums like this help us share information which makes us all a little wiser. Good day to you also:smiley:

Just because a Marine can’t score more than a 25 on their ASVAB doesn’t mean you can’t aim high, too. You just have to aim a little higher than us.

Paul…I am the one that posted. Ten a bushel in a response to him
. I saw what you said you pay but for oysters and sell them for but it seems to be a difference In the village. I checked with daddy andi did make a mistake in my original post. Yep…I did. They get 11.00 or 12.00 a bushel depending on the market when they get the oysters from ruts lease. I verified this with daddy and can produce invoice of anyone doubts it. I was told livingstons pays about the same maybe a dollar or two more or less. Daddy has his own lease and if he sells oysters from those to the dock he gets 13.50. If he lets my brother in law or his friend work his lease anduse his lease number…they give him a buck for each bushel they sell. Last year oysters at Carolina seafood were around 25-27.00. I jverified that too before this post…and if you buy a large amount you sometimes get a discount.
Reason I’m writing this is because it was me that said 10.00. Not toppy…

Pen, I think rut and Livingston buy most of their oyster still muddy. Most other buyers, such as sells and other fish markets, buy them from the pickers after they have been washed which is why they get them so cheap… Washing 40-50 bushels is a back breaking even with 2 or 3 guys.

top, need to come to the oyster roast and meet some of the folks on here that pounded on you, by then this will all be a distant memory…unless you do it again. Glad you learned something and hope to see you in January.

Mmhmmmm…I know that part too. Daddy and those pull their skiffs up to the dock and they unload them “as is”. But I think sells washes his too that he gets from his boys…or maybe they do…I’m not sure…doesn’t really matter…just wanted to clarify that the price I gave was in fact just a couple dollars less at 10.00. Even at 12 it’s a whoooole lot of back breaking work. Daddy amazes me that at 75 he can still pick 15 bushels or more. Tonging is a while other story too…wooweeeee…talking about work! That’s why daddy has “Popeyes” arms

Toppy…come to the oyster roast and wear your best rubber
boots!

Dang those oyster barons. It takes a WHOLE LOT (tremendous if you’ve never done it) of work to pick 15 bushels of oysters in one day. At $12 a bushel that’s a hard $180. Subtract boat, gear, gas, oil expenses leaves you with maybe $100, if nothing breaks. To do it every day and make a living, ya just got to love it. And be one tough SOB. If you ain’t done it you just don’t know… nuff said.

A pressure washer will blast 10 bushels clean in a couple minutes. When I did it we didn’t have a pressure washer at the house, we stopped at the quarter car wash on the way home and cleaned them there. Cost about a dollar to clean a truck load of oysters. Leaves the stink at the car wash instead of the house too
