Tough weekend fishing at Edisto

I live in Greenville, SC, and don’t get down to the salt water on a very regular basis. In fact, this was the first chance I had gottne to fish this year. So, I felt very out of touch with what is going on there.

Fished Friday morning and Saturday morning. Wind was blowing pretty good in most places and lots of dirty water was in the creeks.

On Friday, being out of touch with what’s happeneing, I couldn’t find any bait within a reasonable period of time, so I set off with my artificials. It seems like I spent most of my time driving around trying to find a spot that was sheltered from the wind and that didn’t have muddy water. Well, that just didn’t really happen. Finally bagged it on Friday after a frustrating morning and no fish.

Saturday was more of the same. I had some mud minnows, but that didn’t do any good. To add insult to injury, at low tide, I ended up running aground on some mud and got stuck (first time I’d ever done that). So, 45 minutes later, I was able to get off the mud and head back. On the way back, around the corner from Peter’s Point, I hit that sandbar that stretches across the creek and got stuck AGAIN. Luckily, only for a few minutes. At this point, fearing that I was going to either kill myself from running aground or tear up the lower unit of my motor, I was just ready to give up and go home. I finally made it back to Live Oak Landing in one piece, and just wrote the entire weekend off the books, feeling like quite the non-fisherman. Not even a bite.

On the bright side, the weather was beautiful, and we had a great time on the beach.

Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…

sorry to hear about your misfortune. those are the kind of days that make a cold beer taste even better.

but at least you got to be out on the water. my saturday was spent at my grandparent’s 65th wedding anniversary…next saturday is my cousin’s wedding shower…the following saturday is a high school friend’s wedding…i’ve got to stop, it’s too depressing.

I think that things were pretty quiet down that way no matter who you might be. We put in at Dawho on the way to Edisto in late afternoon. We didn’t get any bites on our way out to the Edisto, but the wind kept us slow. Went to the other side of Dawho at high-tide and the area looked like a lake. Followed the pelicans around diving on bait fish, but didn’t get any bites. Out there my first time and we ran through a sandbar; the skiff has a few marks to show for it. It didn’t even show up on the sonar until too late. Very roughed-up bottom in places. Like southerngent said, you were able to be out on the water and made it back with nothing broken (except maybe a little ego). Not a bad day really. I did catch a sunburn.
