Bangstick…enjoy your weekend
Crab cakes and football, that’s what Maryland does.
Oh, I’m well aware. To be honest, I’m on the fence. On one hand, how the McNair issue was handled was negligent at best. The training staff was slow to respond/react and that’s putting it nicely. That young man’s death was avoidable and inexcusable, period.
As far as the culture, that’s really what I’m on the fence about. MD football, not that it’s ever been a national powerhouse, has become soft. The team plays with no heart and minimal effort and that is what the Terps’ football culture has become. A culture change is needed if the program ever wants to be respectable again and that starts with the coaching staff. The question is, how much of this is the coaching staff going too far and how much of this is the players not wanting to go far enough? To be honest, it’s probably a combination of both. Coaches can’t simply cuss and yell and expect that to work for every player. A good coaching staff gets to know their players better than that and in doing so they can tailor their means of motivation accordingly. For some players, yelling, screaming and cussing pushes their buttons and gets the most out of them but again, not every players responds like that. Some shut down and don’t respond at all. While I’ve never played at a college level, I’ve played plenty of sports from elementary to high school and even during pee wee league football, the coaches cussed, screamed and yelled at us. Most of the time, our parents, if they weren’t already one of the coaches, were standing on the sidelines watching this take place. Back then, it simply wasn’t an issue. It was commonplace and accepted but society as a whole was much different, dare I say tougher with thicker skin, than today’s society.
With today’s societal weakness, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the staff fired and if that happens, they brought it on themselves. Personally, I liked the fire, emotion, tenacity and toughness Durkin brought but there is still a line that must not be crossed. If it is found that the coaching staff crossed that line and they ar
Anyone think manslaugthter charges are in order?
I doubt we’ll see anything to that extent. The S&C coach has already resigned and the rest of the staff has already been placed on admin leave pending the investigation. The university will say all of the “right things” (they’ve already claimed responsibility for McNair’s death as opposed to giving the typical “we’ll wait for the findings of the investigation” response before taking action…like Ohio State) and this case will more than likely be settled out of court.
“…be a man and PM me.”
