Hey, I’m starting now on making all of my King Mackerel rigs and trolley rig components, does anybody know of a person who makes/sells the release clips for cheap ? Usually me and my team make them homemade but I thought I oughta ask before we do since we need 12 release clips. If anybody knows a seller, or makes them themselves please email me ! Thanks
make them yourself. its cheaper and self gratifying
It’s a good time of year to experiment and learn to make them yourself.
It only takes a few components and a few minutes to make up a batch of release clips. Her is the recipe:
- about 8" of 180 to 200# wire, folded exactly in half
- slide the swivel of a a quality snap swivel onto the wire up to the bend
- put both ends of the wire through a plastic bead and slide it up to the swivel
- put both ends of the wire through a 4 oz. egg sinker and slide it up to the bead
- put both ends of the wire through a plastic bead and slide it up to the egg sinker
- spread and bend the two wire ends apart at the point that they exit the last bead
- You are done.
Details matter greatly when kingfishing from the pier so I recommend the you make releases in 4oz. and 6 oz. weights. You’ll need the 6 oz. on windy days (of which there are many on Folly).
Learning to make your own anchors, release clips, and rigs is part of the learning process of becoming successful in such a unique fishing challenge as live bait fishing from the pier. Having plenty of gear so you don’t need to “borrow” from the pier veterans goes a long way. There is nothing worse then having rookies begging to borrow anchors or other terminal gear (I think KingOfThePier will agree with me here).
Not sure who you are yet but I’ll see you on the pier in a few months. Good luck with your release clips. While you are at it learn to make anchors and good king rigs while you have a few months left. Personally it drives me crazy that 90% of king fishermen can’t even make an actual haywire twist.
Best of luck.
