Trolling Motor Batteries

This has probably already been asked before, but can you mix and match batteries for a 24v trolling motor as long as they are both 12v? I know it isn’t ideal, but I’m ready to play with my new toy, but can’t afford 2 new batteries right away. One step at a time. I have one gel cell and one west marine deep cycle.

No problem…just know that each battery’s life may be different. Also…you won’t get much run time from a starting battery…you need to use deep cycle batteries designed for the extended high load demand of a trolling motor. A starting battery’s high current is short lived…for starting your engine…and repeated deep discharge cycles will damage them. Deep cycles run longer…and are designed for deep discharge without damage.

Good luck.

Thanks. The deep cycle is a 70 amp hr and the gel cell is a 165, so it is designed for extended use. I just wasnt sure about the different capacities and if they would discharge at different rates and possibly damage something. I’d ideally like to find another used gel cell (they are used to back up power communications servers).
