I am replacing some reels on my boat, and need three. It’s been a while since I’ve bought new trolling reels, and I’d rather stay away from the expensive/big international 50’s. Thoughts?
Keep an eye on the classifieds. What you need really depends on what you are looking do to with them. TLD 25s are work horses around here but you need to keep good, fresh line on them. If you are just pulling small skirts with ballyhoo then you don’t need anything fancy. Be sure to maintain them well and set your drags right.
How do you plan on running your spread and how is your boat configured? What are you fishing for? I’m sure you will get lots of great input.

there are a couple of 50s at the pawn shop my roommate works at. looked in good condition from what i could tell but i didnt get a close look, i can take pictures if you would like
there was a guy getting rid of a whole bunch of stuff in the offshore reports section thread title “offshore gear” or something like that.
For basic reels, you can’t go wrong with TLDs. If you want to spend a little more $$$, Shimano Tyrnos are a little more pricey than the TLDs, but have a better retrieve speed ratio and an awesome free spool for circle hook fishing.
For the most part, while fishing around here you should not need anything bigger than a 30, unless you are plug fishing for marlin.
Are you looking for single or 2 two speed reels? Any idea on sizes you are considering or what the main species you will be targeting with these reels?

They will mainly be used for dolphin and wahoo.
I’m not too familiar with the Tyrnos, but they look nice. Are they much nicer than the TLD to justify the increase in price?
Blackfin take a look at the PENN Squall lever drags. They are basically graphite Internationals and are available in various sizes. The 2 speeds come in a 16, 30, and 50. I think the SQL30VSW and SQL50VSW will most likely be the best match for what you are looking for. I have posted a link below if you would like more information on these reels. Hope this helps.

Wow…One of those Squalls may be in my future…
Haddrell’s has an awesome deal going on right now with the Squalls. I think if you buy a Squall 2 speed you get a $150 Ally rod for like $50.

They are solid reels. Much faster retrieve and have much better drags.
TLD, Tyrnos and avets are all worth the money.
I am not a fan of tiagras due to price and weight, and penn isn’t there anymore in quality. Too many cheaper or equal prices options.
Look at the Avet HXW4.6 single speed for a lightweight versatile reel for off SC that is durable but not two speed anodized priced.
All that said, tld25 or squal will catch 95% of what’s put there if you have the patience and take care of your stuff.

Everyone I have sold the Squalls to have been pleased with them. Good looking reels. Nice weight to them too.
experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation
-
that thing you get just moments after you needed it.
I have to agree with Phin on the TLD and Tyrnos reference (no experience with Avets). I have used both extensively, and with little maintenance, they have held up for 3+ years each. I am unsure if they sell Tyrnos models anymore, though.
How do Avets compare? I’ve heard they are hard to reel when you put much drag on them… Is this true of the 2-speed Avets?
Every lever drag becomes harder to reel when preset drag is set higher than the reel is designed to fish. You’re talking about 25lbs with the HX and over 45lbs with their 30/2. … Way more than what is needed trolling.
Avets are superior to all the above reels in performance, finish and durability- while being cheaper than the equivalent internationals or tiagras.
The tyrnos reels are essentially tiagras without the polished anodized aluminum. The paint will eventually come off and wear, but as said above they’re significantly better performing than TLD’s.
the differences in these reels become most recognizable when you catch bigger fish on the reels.
Some of this is ford vs Chevy type brand loyalty, but there are honestly differences in these products that you’ll find if you get a chance to use them on others’ boats. Charter guys are often sponsored so dont assume that what they run is the best. Free or cheap can make up for a lot of things.
There are tons of new options out there these days as far as trolling reels. Shimano talica and okuma makaira, cedros, etc are examples of reels that are great but you don’t see around here because local shops don’t push them.
I use an Avet trx30/2 for the planer and accurate bx600’s as my trollers. They all do different things if I need them too. The accurate 600’s are about the same capacity of TLD25’s. the same exact thing can be accomplished with a 14/0 and 6/0 penn senators. Just isnt my preference based on my experiences and what I place value on.

Like Phin said it?s a Ford vs Chevy deal and everyone is going to have an opinion. You know your budget do your research talk to the local dealers and put the reels listed above in your hand and get a feel for them. Other things to consider if you like servicing your own reels are parts availability and customer service. You will find some companies lack in these areas and others shine. If you have any questions on PENN just let me know. Again if you are coming to the Saltwater Sportsman seminar this weekend in Columbia come by the PENN table and I?ll walk you through our reels and their features.
