Fished with an old bud Saturday afternoon, 54 degress air temp, we went up the creeks to hide from the wind. Got right on them again. Bits were fast tap, tap fish on or off, you had to be quick. We landed a good 40 trout, fish were 13" to 28" big and small ones thrown back and kept a few for supper. We had double’s and triple’s on, I had my bud fishing two rods, all fish caught while trolling. Get out there the trout bite is off the hook right now, all caught on grubs
Great Job! Were you trolling with or against the tide and how was your depth?
A 28 inch trout you say, um huh!
28 inch trout is about 7.5 to 8 lbs. trout that size are worthy of a pic.
got any pictures?

I think tideline is throwing the bs flag! HAHA
We have a “second” on the BS flag. I’ll believe anything up to 26" and 6 lbs which is probably a stretch, but 7 1/2 - 8 lbs? Come on! Those would be fish of a lifetime in this area, and there aren’t but a mere few caught that size each year.

There are a modest amount around (more than last year). Most are hanging back in the smaller creeks as this post suggests, but the sizes have been fairly small on average in my waters. 20-30 is do-able, but 1/3 will be keepers. And yes, I agree. Don’t post of 5+ lb. trout multiple times w/o pics.

This one from Saturday was only 27". Caught on pictured 12" paddletail and 1lb. jighead.
That’s funny I was just thinkin’…now if that’s a 27" trout, then that must be a 12" jig. Too good!

Interresting, We were troling against the tide, get out and fish sometime and just maybe you can catch one as well. Good luck
Local Boy, Just having fun.
Don’t get all huffy Local Boy! 40+ trout is a great day in anyone’s book, and done quite often in the low country, but… when you catch 40+ and the smallest is a 2 lber.(1st trip), and your largest is 8 lbs. (2nd trip), you gotta believe you are going to be questioned w/o pics. I’ve had several 100+ trout days, but never seen or heard of in SC) the size you are describing on average.

Local Boy, what you’ve did is possible.
I targeted trout last Friday and Saturday between trips and caught half a dozen in less than 30 mins all over 17" largest at 23" both days. I’ve seen some really big trout over the past couple of weeks while scouting some areas around the harbor and cooper river. An 8lb trout isn’t hard to believe from what I’ve seen on the water the last couple of weeks. One group I saw had at least 8 over 7lbs in it.
From what I can tell we’re going to have a nice trout fishery this year. In hope’s that I can land some more like this one this year and best the boats personal best.
i’ve only caught one trout that big in my life. was 27 and one half inches long weighed 8 lbs even. trust me i took pictures. that was about 15 years ago and haven’t caught a bigger one yet.

Question (not an argurement)? Just one of concern.
Are they REALLY back? After 2 cold winters and the worst numbers in DNR recording history, are they REALLY back? Or are a fortunate few finding schooled up, strong survivors? Maybe I’m just paranoid, but even though trout are a fast recovery species, I find it hard to believe they “are back”.
Hope I’m wrong. I luvs me some trout!

My opinion…NO. Before the last 2 winters, I was seeing THOUSANDS of trout on the flats in the N. Edisto. They would be most visible during Feb. and March after a cold front that dropped the water temp. several degrees. Last year, you were lucky to see a few. This year, I have seen some packs of 25-50. Nothing over 3 lbs., though, whereas in the past, there were lots of 20-25 inchers. I know the Charleston area (especially the Wando) produces bigger trout than what we have, but any trout over 25" is a HORSE. If you catch one, take a picture and share(on a measuring board) as these fish are trophies in SC. BTW, during peak fall fishing during the Haddrell’s Point 6-week trout tourney, nothing 7 lbs. or over (to my knowledge) has been weighed the last 2 years they had it. I think 6 1/2 was the largest, and that was before the winter kills.

Only time will tell, but I like what I’ve been seeing this year vs last year. My personal opinion from last winter is it wasn’t as bad as they thought. The voluntary release DNR put on trout last year was a good idea. Just wish they would change the regs a little on all our inshore species.
