Heard that two guys found 72 dead/dying trout on Wimbee Creek after cold snap. Spotted several around 24 inches. I hope this is an isolated case, as I’ve not seen any other reports yet.
I was concerned that, with the front blowing in so fast and with such high winds, the trout in the shallows could be stunned and impacted. The other problem is that the ACE Basin/St. Helena Sound area I fish had already lost a large percentage of its oyster population to heavy 2013 rains. With this cold hitting what had been described as a resurgence of small oysters in the area at low tide and at night, these young oysters were also likely hurt. No oysters…no fish. Double whammy.
I can’t substantiate the report, but it’s reputable. Again, I just hope it’s isolated.
You know I have read the Gazette report about the oysters in the Broad River. Where did you hear about the oysters in the ACE Basin/St. Helena?
In the two times, I have been out picking oysters in different areas I did not notice any difference in beds I have been picking around for a few years.
Also a friend who picks out in the Harbor River area said he hasn’t had any problems either.
I have been hoping that the Gazette article wasn’t as bad as they made it sound. If you heard from a reputable source or experience though about the Edisto side, maybe its different.
I was also worried about the trout with last week’s cold. I haven’t heard any trout kill reports.
I did go fishing Sunday after all that rain Saturday. I fished the last bit of incoming to sunset. Ended up catching some over the slot bass and then a bunch of slot bass. I also ended up catching a nice 22" black drum. Caught them all on frozen shrimp from this past fall’s creek shrimp. Not sure if they would’ve liked gas station frozen shrimp.
Anyway mainly concerned about the oysters you spoke of in St. Helena.
Fish this weekend and on Sunday picked up a doz nice trout all legal most 15+" and I was not in a I got to catch every fish in the creek Mood I was just in a life is great mood feeling the fish pick up the bait feeling the rod and ? what do I do now Mood missed several fish picked some black drum because i was letting or not setting the hook in an aggresive mind set. Anyway I had great time caught some every nice fish ( the trout are fine the water temp. was above 50 deg. Caught several 25" Red’s in the same area iand I can tell you the cold has not slowed down their ability to strip line off the reel
Wildlifesc, you heard anymore on any trout kills? Just curious after this last cold snap.
On the oysters, it seems to me that we are actually having an increase on the St. Helena side. I’ve fished a couple of areas above Morgan Island that has some new beds that were never there. Hope this is the actual case. Not only good for fishing, but sure do wonders for holding the banks from washing.
I was in Columbia as sponsor of the DNR Legislative Dinner on Tuesday night, and spoke to several biologists. No one had reported additional kills as of Tuesday. I hope the sun and warming differences this week have helped in this latest cold snap.
I also asked about the oysters, and was told they are pretty hardy except when high & dry with extended cold. The oysters should be ok. I’m glad you’re seeing an increase Fred…I need to get back out and grab a few for dinner one night!

Not doubt wildlifesc. I put some rubber gloves on the wife and give her and old pair of welding gloves and a tall set of rubber boats. Tell her to stay on hard ground. Catch a negative tide and let her hunt for the big singles that have fallen off the clusters. It is then her mission to find bigger singles than me! Win Win.
