Trout Time

All fish caught on 1/4 oz. jig head with Bass Assassin plastic. OUr go to color is Chicken on a Chain. It’s been our experience that when we find the big schools of mullet and the tide starts moving, that is Trout Time.

What do you do with that many trout? Do you sell those to restaurants?

We divide them up among everyone on the trip. I feed my family and friends who can’t go fishing. I’ve never sold a fish in my life.

We throw back a lot. The minimum size is 12”, but we self-impose a 14” size limit., so we end up throwing back a bunch of fish that would be legal to keep. I throw back ALL of the catfish and jack crevalles. We fish some outer islands that are over 20 miles offshore from where we launch. In my bay boat, I have to pick calm days to make that run, and this time of year, there are more days that I can’t go than days I can. The limit is 25 per person. If I can catch my limit, I do. I never keep over the legal limit.

I love the passive aggressive questions you receive when you post these types of pictures almost as much as viewing the pictures themselves, HW. LOL!!!

Keep’em coming! Thanks for sharing.

It’s Louisiana not SC. Don’t hate the playa, hate the game. I fish there a bunch and think they would benefit cutting it to 15.

bangstick, I wondered if I was the only one picking up on the passive aggressive questions. I certainly didn’t post pix with the intent of ruffling anyone’s feathers.

Redstripe,
I’d be fine with a 15 fish limit. It sure would make it easier for me to catch a limit. I do NOT catch my limit a WHOLE LOT MORE days than I do. I love wade fishing down there, but it only lasts for a relatively short period. As the water warms up, sharks really become a nuisance. If you don’t go back to the boat and empty your stringer pretty often, sharks with take 'em from you. A lot of folks are scared that sharks may mistake them for something to eat. In warmer months, waders become fewer and fewer.

I may have mentioned this before when discussing their 25 fish limit. A marine biologist down there said that the trout population there could not be hurt with rods and reels. That’s saying a lot.

I was not being passive aggressive. I just wouldn’t know what to do with that many fish unless I was selling them. I don’t keep any fish I’m not going to eat within 3 days hence the question.

Definitely not the only one picking up on that, HW.

I’ve read enough of your posts to know you mean no harm. Some folks just can’t help themselves, I guess.

My dad’s absolute favorite fish to eat is sea trout so he’d be in hog heaven in your fish camp. If he lived here with me, I’d have to stock my freezer HW style to keep him satisfied. Lol! If frozen properly, I think trout freezes just fine. Sure, fresh is always better but I’ve never had any issues with thawed out sea trout.

Like I said before, keepm’em comng, HW!

bangstick,
How does your dad like to cook trout? I baked some filets last night for dinner. They were so good, I baked another for breakfast. DELICIOUS!!!

You name it! Lol! Fried, blackened, baked, grilled, smoked (made some fish dip with it). Personally, it’s not oily enough to want to smoke it. I thought it was too dry afterwards. Baked (roasted) whole and fried (fillets) are his two favorite ways though.

Some buddies of mine who fish for a living told me several years ago that there are two ways you can fix fish. You can fry it…or EFF it up.
They never tried my baked or blackened fish.
