One may think at first embarrassment comes from losing to Clemson. But being a Gamecock for almost 50 years, I never once felt embarrassed until the most recent Palmetto Bowl, or as it will be remembered in my mind, “Bottle Gate.”
I have never written a letter to the editor or expressed views in a public format, but I felt it incumbent to do so regarding this game.
I love college sports, not only for the spectacle but for the character it exposes when human beings compete. When I see a cheap hit or bending of the rules, I gauge my temperament accordingly.
South Carolina fans throwing bottles that day is now old news, as was the subsequent response or lack thereof. But the embarrassment still lingers.
I understand the announcer weakly addressed it. Coach Dabo Sweeney showed protective instinct (smart strategy). But where was Athletic Director Ray Tanner or USC President Harris Pastides? That was a missed opportunity for a teachable moment. Not only for the perpetrators but to all. Universities should not only teach academics but mold character.
There will be a discussion on how to alleviate such actions in the future, but no matter what precautions are taken, it will not come close to addressing the cowardly and rude behavior.
Maybe the administration needs a refresher course on the university’s motto, which is engraved on our rings: “Learning humanizes character and does not permit it to be cruel”
The entire team locked arms and walked towards the student section and then a few of the players flipped the crowd off. But let’s not let facts get in the way of some cock hatred.

Renfrow had a different take on the situation, he was there.
South Carolina students start cursing and throwing things at the Clemson players as soon as they came on to the field for pre-game stretching.
When Clemson did its usual “Victory March,” which began in the Tommy Bowden era at Clemson, South Carolina students gave them the No. 1 sign, except with their middle fingers, while using foul language as well. The “Victory March” is when Clemson players lock arms during every pre-game warm up and walk side-by-side in unity from about the 40-yard line to their goal line.
“For us it is about coming together one last time during pregame and going arm-and-arm and just that unity,” Renfrow said. “We are walking through that environment and we are going as one. I think that is what is. We were walking straight into the student section so there might be a little misconception.”
Silly coots - They improved their MOL (margin of loss) to the taters by 25 points, from 2016 to 2017. That’s a big time improvement. Moreover, after the game Bentley claimed the accomplished their stated goal of “Never Again”.
Why do you have to focus on some drunk kids throwing bottles at the tigers? Why cant a coot just be happy about where they are instead focusing on Bowden, Victory March, warm ups etc?

G - If you watch the coot post game presser, a reporter asked a question to Bentley that “Never Again” seemed to have just happened “Again”. Young Jake was adamant they had indeed accomplished the “Never Again” goal. You see, it didn’t have anything to do with a win. It really meant - “We’ll never quit fighting and playing hard again” until the game is over. So I guess they did, and that’s that.
Remember back in the day when sc used to play a good team tight, and would say - “Actually, that was a pretty (**() good loss!” I think Never Again is similar to that.
