After a nice stretch of weather for most of the week, we decided to wait until the last possible day to go fishing. The crew was arranged, then changed, and changed again. Wound up with me, my dad, #1 son, and my long lost friend Phin. Got the boat loaded and gassed Saturday night and got things topped off Sunday with ice. Hit the beach around 6 and were trolling the ledge by 8. Little sloppy on the way out but not bad and it laid down as we ran.
There were some huge storms just offshore, so we dropped lines on the ledge and started zig zagging. Storms were still offshore so we stayed put and we see a large container ship off in the distance. No big deal, happens all the time. Ship gets closer and turns into an AIRCRAFT CARRIER. So the vhf sounds fishing vessel of our starboard bow, please acknowledge. We are conducting flight operations and are restricted in our ability to maneuver. So we respond, no problem, just dont run over any of our lines.
It is hard to describe, but Top Gun was going through my mind as the military operations were going on, probably within mile of us. We watched helicopters take off; give us a fly by and then the jets started taking off. We watched them catapult the jets off the front and then watched them land. I told my son, he may never see something like that, close up again in his life. The carrier was pouring on the coals too and after our air show was over, we watched as the wake from the ship was white capping mile behind the ship. Probably 4 footers, stacked up, and very steep. This could get interesting. I think the second one got some blue water in the boat and after that it was back to business. Did not matter we were fishless up to that point, after seeing that.
We herd that radio call. I herd CVN 77 and said what?!! Where?? Missed the flight ops part, so now the RAM part makes sense. All of us were wondering if the 77 was broke or something.
Best hospitality anyone could ever ask for! I really appreciated getting to come along on the TWO SONS.
When he says stretched out the 300’s he means that when his dad and I were cleaning the scamps they were still flopping around… After coming from 50 miles out. Wow!!!
I guess that’s " how he rolls… "
I have some more pics from phone cam I will post later.
Son #1 reminded me of myself when I was a kid. Could be bad or could be good… But he will know how to fish offshore.

The thing blew by us and was out of sight before we knew it!
great report and pics.Glad your kid got to see the show.
maybe he’ll grow up to be a top gun
the govt has us down to a 225± ship navy, we were at 500 ships under Reagan.
we heard some chatter about it and later saw one of the blackhawks along with that we thought was a large destroyer or cruiser, way off on the distance, but maybe it was that carrier… anybody see other ships with them besides the George W Bush?
We heard a P-3 up in the air talking to him on Friday when we were out there. Didn’t realize that he was THAT close to the coast. Pretty cool report there guys.
If you look close, you can see the hull-matching aqua mist color of the curtains’ interior.
I am not a huge fan of Contenders, but this is one boat I would absolutely love to have myself. Set up perfectly. Beautiful boat with every detail and feature cared for meticulously. Would bet the farm on this boat being nicer/better than brand new boats coming out of the Contender factory right now…
Showroom condition. When you go fishing in this thing, you seriously think you’re on a boat show model meant to sell 5 or 6 more of these model boats in just a day or two on display.
