I’ve been fishing with Senator 114H2s and TLD 25s down here for a while and while they’re decent reels, I’d prefer something a little sturdier, faster gear ratio and better lever drag. I’ve been looking at getting a set of the Shimano Tyrnos 30 single speeds as I can get them at a pretty fair price and can’t seem to find too many bad reviews on them. Does anyone have any opinions on these reels? I’d prefer the 2 speed model but I’m not sure it’s worth the extra $70 a reel to me right now.
Probably one of the most versatile reels out there but I would highly recommend getting the 2 speed.
Have you used the Tyrnos 30s before?

i have a pair of them and they have never let me down, i agree though you should get the 2 speeds.
What rods do you have them on? How easy are they to tear apart? Do you have single or 2 speed reels?

Me and my father in law each bought one rigged them on travalas great setup
</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”> What Trevalas do you have them on? I’m looking at some matching Star Handcrafted 6’6" 30-50 lb rods to troll with.
Get the 2 speed and put them on a 5’6" “tuna stick” style 50# (long foregrip) rods. Once you start trolling with 2 speed reels you will never wnat single speed again.

Chris, many of the boys in the serious sailfish\white marlin tournaments have ditched their old TLD 25\30s and gone with the Tyrnos 30’s if that tells you anything. I’ve used them a couple of times and they felt pretty awesome, though I don’t own any (YET). When going back from one of those to a TLD 25, you will feel like you are winding up a jack in the box.
Rapchizzle although I do not own a tyrnos 30 I have used one and they are amazing! The outside is aluminum but the side plates are graphite to reduce a lot of weight. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewshimanotyrnos.html Great review but i would recommend the 2 speed over the single speed. The gear ratio on the single is pretty high and does not suite most people due to this.
I have a Tyrnos 30 2 speed on a 5’6 roller Daiwa rod and it is my favorite reel. I will be getting 3-4 more. They are great when it is time to clear lines with the high speed gears, and tough as heck in low gear on a larger fish. I think they are the best bang for you buck in a 30 class reel.
I have four of the TYR30ii and love them. I think everyone is right about going with the 2speed… no way you’ll regret it. I have used cheaper and higher end Shimano reels, and the Tyrnos line is my favorite for quality/value for recreational fishing. Good luck.
Got a single speed and a 2 speed, get the 2 speed like others have said. Much better reels than the TDL’s.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Chris, I love the tuna stick style rods, personal preference. You can really put a ton of pressure on a fish with these, the long foregrip gives great leverage.

I ended up getting a pair of Daiwa Saltist Big Game 30 2 speeds instead. They seem to be more solidly constructed as the left sideplate and frame are one solid piece of aluminum, I like the 2 speed selector button and release better and they’re just a tad lighter. The boss man just gave me a set of Tyrnos 20 2speeds to run on the boat as well so I think I’ll be set for the season.
