Shabazz Napier, point guard for The University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball team, recently told reporters he understands why athletes at Northwestern need a union, as he sometimes has to go to bed “starving” because he cannot afford food.

“We as student athletes get utilized for what we do so well. We are definitely best to get a scholarship to our universities, but at the end of the day, that doesn’t cover everything. We do have hungry nights that we don’t have enough money to get food and sometimes money is needed,” the senior told reporters. “I think, you know, Northwestern has an idea, and we’ll see where it goes.”

What I don’t understand is how someone that is given room and board is starving. That is 3 meals a day for nothing… If he is starving, it is his own fault

I agree, at Clemson, there was a dining facility somewhere that was open during meal times. A few were even open until 11:00pm or later. If they don’t get anything to eat it’s of their own choosing.

This is a good example of how privileged, and even spoiled, these kids are. Do away with it.

And they get a stipend, although I think it is real small. And they get food money when they are on travel.

Maybe he was referring to the midnight munchies they get after smoking pot.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Seriously though, those athletes have access to plenty of food.

College sports has created a group of prima donnas…they EXPECT to be babied and catered to…I agree with FishB8 - if he’s hungry, it’s because he didn’t go get it. Guess he wants room service now. boo hoo hoo…
