Ugly Ducklin Charters - 7-26-09

We went fishing this morning with Tripp and his three boys from Fountain Inn and had a great time. With three young fellas on the boat, you know that it’s always going to be a blast and this time was no exception. We took a few minutes to start with to show a new guy how to throw a net the right way and caught a load of menhaden. Then it’s off to the holes to set for reds. With the kids, everything they see is amazing and interesting and new and that is what makes this job that we do so rewarding. Hey, I even learned this morning that fiddler crabs like to eat Cheez-its. We picked up a small bass or two first and then even a little flounder. It was a good rotation that we had when the big ones rolled in. It’s hard to explain in words just how much power a fish can generate when you are fighting him, but this one demonstrated it all very well. Our little guy was reeling just as hard as he could even with a broken finger, when the fish broke the reel seat loose from the rod blank. Now that’s impressive, but he kept on reeling. We almost had this fish up when he made one big run that was just too much. Across a log and Snap! Well, we’ll get him next time. We spent some great time with these guys fishing and we even saw some big tarpon jumping out in the river. Hopefully we can get into those sooner or later too. A nice ride up through the cut to take a look out over the sound and we headed in. I’ll look forward to seeing our group again when they come back down. Take care guys!

Glad to see someone was catching fish on Sunday. I was going to try and fish the out going tide but the water was so muddy I didn’t even put a line out. Water coming out of the creeks was even dirtier. Then came the winds. Nice day for a boat ride though.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

Hey Steve,

Not wanting to know your exact spots but what vicinity or river did you see tarpon jumping in. I’ve never caught one and planned on dropping a line in attempt in the next day or so.

It’s been way too rough in the sound and off the beach. You don’t have to post on here but if you’re willing to share a tad bit of info you can send to me directly. Any one else seeing any tarpon. I saw one two years ago just off of otter island in the sound, about 50 yards or so off the beach line

We’ve been seeing them in the South Edisto River right in front St. Pierre Creek and on up toward ■■■■■■■ Cut.
