on three seperate occasions I have watched wildlife officers fishing out of state boats. They never checked anyone they just fished and left.I guess the DNR budget is not as bad as they say.If anyone else sees this report it.Maybe they will stop fishing on TAX PAYER money.
They are conducting scientific studies to determine species populations. Most of them hate fishing but, it is part of the job.
Scientific Studies?!?! Do they have the super secret map that tells them where fish hang out so they load out and go out? If so I’m planning a raid on the HQ if anyone else is in!
Why would you assume they were doing somthing wrong? Most of these men and women work long hours for little pay. They are trying to protect something you love. I think it is so sad that people are so fast to try to make them look bad. I have found most of them to be nice people. If you are not doing things you should not be doing you will never have a problem.

Just slowly motor up to them and ask for their fishing licenses and do a safety equipment check. Don’t forget to check their ice chest.

Used to work @ Ft. Johnson a long time ago. There were several projects that caught and kept fish to do research on them. Examined stomach contents to see what they are eating and other legitimate work. So, to see people in DNR uniforms on while fishing might be nothing at all.
Also, when I worked for DNR, state law allowed the recreational use of state equipment when off the clock, if you were going to be there anyway and it did not cause increased costs for the state. If the law still works that way, again, those DNR guys may have been doing nothing wrong.

Lunch break? Not sure what kind of hours a shift runs for DNR, but I know if I worked on the water and got a 1 hour lunch I’d spend it looking for dinner! Can’t run to Mickey D’s! Bigfisher makes good points. Sad what most make doing what they love to protect what we love.
Taz, maybe something local might be more appropriate. Like a call to the local DNR at Ft. Johnson. The last thing I think we need is Columbia questioning what we do around here. “Vote for me! I’m the guy who cut costs at DNR in Charleston by 20% since all they do is fish on the clock!”

Hey Bugs, don’t forget about those that are now getting FREE cellphones from DSS. Yep, that’s right, we (people that work) are now paying for free cellphones for those less fortunate souls that cannot afford them. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
bugs, hope you’re still taking the blood pressure medication
firstlight, in case you weren’t aware of the distinction, if the DNR sticker has an orange stripe under it, it’s a law enforcement officer. if it doesn’t, it’s researchers.
there’s only one inshore hook and line sampling project going that i’m aware of right now, and it involves trying to prove that adding hard structure and thereby making oyster reefs under dock walkways improves fish habitat. folks working for the Shellfish Research Section sample regularly in the charleston harbor area using “control” docks (with no hard structure) and then around experimental docks with such additions. over time, they hope to show that standardized fishing efforts (1 hour, with two people, with a choice of 3 kinds of rigs/baits on the same rods and reels) will show an increase in the numbers of recreationally-important species that use these docks.
if it succeeds, it’s a way to get the public involved and interested in improving estuarine ecosystems for all concerned. in that case, who wouldn’t want DNR to help them put some oyster habitat under their dock? it even improves water quality through filtration!
Next time ask 'um in person instead of bashing on the net if you had a problem with it. Just whoop the boat up next to them and say - aarrrr! Prepare to be boarded!!! Should get your answer.

I appreciate your concern firstlight. It is discouraging to see those with authority abusing their positions in any capacity. Like some have mentioned they may have been doing nothing wrong. Then again they may have been. Its better to mention a concern than to ignore it. If you see them again pull up and ask if they are catching anything and see what lures they are using. They may be willing to educate you on their doings. IGNORE the hate!

Your not one of those Wack job liberals are you???
I don’t “hate” anyone…I just can’t stand stupidity…
Furthermore, as Barbawang mentioned, I’ll bet you they weren’t DNR “officers” at all…they were most likely researchers in a DNR boat doing what they do…uhhhhh REASEARCH!!!
OMG…there are actually jobs that require people to catch fish and study them!!![:0]

What Barbawang said-though he failed to mention the hook and line fishing for broodstock trout, drum, and cobia that occurs throughout the year. Fish caught on hook and line are more likely to survive the transition to captivity than those caught in nets and are very important to stock enhancement programs.
wonder if it’s a coincidence firstlight has not reappeared??

After days… I find this Totally Ridiculous. “firstlight” if you’re so upset of the SC DNR guys Fishing out of a State Boat, Call the SC DNR and ask to speak to a Supervisor.
Here, call the Director…John Frampton, Director of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.
OK Bugs maybe hate was the wrong word to use. I’ll take it back. Dont want to imply you hate anyone. I just found your hissy fit to be very belittling. Sounds like FL was just wanting to correct a percieved wrong. After reading many of the informative post chances are FL perception was wrong. That doesnt mean he is stupid.
