VMS vote

Just read that VMS was voted down unanimously due to overwhelmingly negative public comments

Good!

“Good things come to those who bait”

Where did you read ? This is great news! But VMS is only one slice in the pie that the SAFMC has in store for us. More MPA’S are proposed and more restrictive - type1 no fishing of any type. VMS was the MPA enforcement tool of choice for this plan. We will fight the VMS battle again - Thanks to all that helped !

When do we get to vote on who get’s pink slips?

This would have passed if we said nothing. Thank you to everyone who submitted comments. Now we need to work on positive solutions that limit the waste in our fisheries while preserving our freedom to fish and eat them.

Here is a link to the comments that stopped VMS. http://www.safmc.net/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=6BRGvPfpw8g%3D&tabid=789

I bet the guy from the electronics co that presented the units to the council is pissed! A big commission down the drain! Too Bad!!!

This VMS victory was a win for fishermen and freedom as well as a defeat for crony capitalism and the evils of bureaucracy.

It isn’t done yet. The full council takes it up next week.

SHOULD go as recommended yesterday.

I looked at a lot of the responses and only found 1 person in support of VMS.
Sure there may have been others but I didn’t see them.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to send in opposing comments.

Dr. Duval said they will have the final official vote tomorrow. You can sign up at this link to listen live to the vote. http://www.safmc.net/Meetings/CouncilMeetings/WebinarinfoCouncilmeetings/tabid/739/Default.aspx

I found a half dozen comments supporting VMS. A couple were from eco-charities and the rest were from fishermen or permit holders who are in bed with the eco-charities including the man who will replace Tom Burgess on the council after this meeting. That new council member/VMS supporter has been pushing catch shares for years.

How is it possible to head off appointments like that?
We need more reasonable minded people on council, not a bunch of eviros hellbent on shutting us down.

I tried to get fishermen in NC to contact the Governor in support of a better candidate. Obviously not enough did. Enough people speaking up is the only way to get the right people appointed. Politicians are going to go with who their “donors” tell them to unless enough voters say otherwise.

The council just killed Amendment 30 with no objection!

What does “catch shares” mean that Tom Burgess is supporting so heavily? Why would he want this?

Catch Shares allocate private ownership of our public resources. The BSB pot endorsement was a way to give around 30 commercial S/G permit holders control of the quota. Those permit holders would get a share of the commercial BSB quota based on their past landings. This is not the right way to go. These are public resources that should not be owned by anyone. Catch Shares are a scheme dreamed up by eco-charities like EDF so their corporate donors can buy up the shares over time and control our public resources as well as our access to it.

Catch Shares are the government claiming ownership of the fish and selling exclusive rights to those fish to individuals, corporations or ENGOs

Before you can fish, you have to buy a share of the catch from the government. If no shares are available, you have to buy them from someone that has a share or you do not get to fish

Catch Shares are a way of forcing more people off the water

No better example than on your TV with the show Deadliest Catch. Years ago there were hundreds or even thousands of boats and fishermen crab fishing, then the industry was forced into catch shares.

What happened? Thousands of fishermen were put out of work while the same amount of crab landed was concentrated into the hands of a few fishermen.

Towns that once thrived basically shut down. A few boats make a fortune, the vast majority of fishermen get put out of work.

Pretty solid summary right there.

Squid Row, you should submit that as a letter to the editor and National Fisherman.

That is a very good explaination.
Easy to understand and absolutely correct.
