Fished Sunday and because the wind seemed to be blowing on every single potentially productive trout or spottail area, we opted to hunker down and fish for the heads. Caught around 25, with only one keeper.
Overall, at least for me, fishing has been slow the past few weeks. Maybe I’m fishing too fast?
On another note, DNR is hosting a free kids fishing tournament on the Mt. P Pier on Nov. 15. More info is posted in the tournaments and events forum. Hope to have a good turnout.
You can’t catch what isn’t there. Populations are very low for trout and reds across the state. It is much more difficult than normal to get on a good bite with the reds and trout. Also, sheeps (on average) have been small this year. Good on you to salvage some bites.
I disagree, I’ve been on the fish very consistently with good catches of larger trout. Last time I fished for heads we took home 10 with only 3 shorts in 2 hours of fishing. Sometimes your on them sometimes your not. They are out there maybe just not where they have been in the past. I’ve had my fair share of dry spells keep at it!
Until you’ve fished thoroughly throughout the state, it is difficult to judge one year from the next. If you are on a good population of reds or trout, it is localized and that is great. If you want to hear WIGGS opinion though on the cyclical population density of redfish and trout state wide, just give him a call at SCDNR. Fritz, I acknowledge you are a tremendous shark fisherman, but relying on you for an assessment on the population of trout and redfish in SC would be like asking Lorenzo Ward on how to stop a nose bleed.

Careful Karl, you might get challenged to a fishoff.
raddaddy is right, I have no friends, or family for that matter, who have ever worked for dnr and studied fisheries management in this state. I’m clueless, unless we are shark fishing. Get over yourself raddaddy.

This is interesting. My fishing doesn’t support it but hey who am I. I’d be interested to see what the final numbers for 2014 are.
First tournament of the year for the Low Country Redfish Cup will pay out between 5-7 thousand dollars for 1st place. If they are so dumb, why don’t you fish the circuit? Answer: You can’t compete.
I just noticed in your photo, the 73.1 is not the water temp., but the gps speed. That’s incredibly irresponsible boating in my opinion. And the fact that you are attempting to take a photo while going that fast, dammit! By the way, what pitch prop are you turning at 5700 rpm?
