Washed ashore.

Isn’t this a sturgeon? Saw it on the beach yesterday being eaten by a bald eagle and a buzzard.

Wow, kinda crazy. For sure Sturgeon. Amazing how some species remain after 70 million years.

Holy cow that’s crazy. Where was this?

With all the flooding on the Edisto and such, I am sure he was washed down from some body of fresh water and the salt eventually killed him.

Atlantic Sturgeon are rare but do exist. In 2012 a big one washed up on Folly. Everbody though it was some kind of sea monster or something.

Sturgeon are delicious, good eating , wrap them in pancetta, crispy bacon, a nice sticky, tangy red wine sauce over creamy mushroom risotto, yum.

Aren’t they illegal to catch and eat?

I used to cook them years ago in a restaurant, havent seen them since, you may be right papajohick, honestly dont know- they were delicious, Ill have to look that one up. I did look up how old they were as some folks questioned “70 million years” They are at least that old and more. They are a meaty fish with a high fat content that you can actually see, its yellow. The fish doesnt dry out easily and can stand up to bold flavors such as bacon and red wine because of the richness, the meat is white, with yellow fat on the outside like a steak. The laws may have changed on consumption.

Okay, here is a lesson…

Modern Sturgeon have evolved very little since the late Cretaceous period. Which began 100.5 million years ago and ended 66 million years ago. They are considerd “Living Fossils”.

I am way better at MATH than HISTORY though.

Thanks!

I saw one about 3’ long a year ago at South Folly, on the county park beach.

As a Christian, I just have to chuckle at all the evolution nonsense I read here on occasion. Just makes me laugh, that’s all.
One question, though… Why do we still have monkeys and apes? Hmmm?Problematic

Monkeys are important-after all if we didnt have them who would teach the teenagers proper technique, and no zoo experience is complete without having a little poo thrown at you

You can witness evolution happen in bacteria in a matter of days, if not hours. SMH! Why? Only because they reproduce in hours, not every 25 years or so.

No monkeys are not problematic. To say so shows a complete lack of understanding of the topic.

First, Most, Biggest

Only in the South would religion be brought up over talk of a fish. On a side note, I have as much belief in religion as I do Star wars being based off a true story.

Have yall seen the video of the atlantic sturgeon jumping and almost hitting the lady on the boat down here a few years ago?
