Going out tomorrow. Any updates on the water temp and clarity?
I was out two weeks ago and the bait was getting scarce, and everything seemed to have lock jaw.
Trying to decide whether I would be wasting time trying for bulls around the near-shore rips or whether its time to just go for trouts and slot reads in the creeks.
Last I checked water Temp was 62. If you look around you can find some clear water. I am having a tough time catching Redfish around high tide. Once the water is almost out of the grass they can be found in small creeks and on the flats around oyster bars. Trout are great back in larger creeks and on the high water around oyster bars along the Chechessee. I have not fished for them but what I have heard is the Bulls are nearshore like the Rockpile and Short Range area.
Well, if you fished yesterday it was one of the finest days on the water this fall. Perfect air temps and slick calm water just about everywhere. We caught several healthy weakfish and lots of blues, too, in the nearshore range 1-3 miles.
Cooler and breezier today. I showed 61 degrees on the water temp and that is still UP from 58 earlier this week after those consecutive cold nights of last weekend. Let’s hope it doesn’t dip too much over the coming weeks.
There are still bull reds inshore and nearshore. You will likely have to soak bait with great patience but they are still there.
A favorite recent moment was further out at the Ross a week ago when we pulled up a bull and many others followed it up to the surface, just like cobia do. It was a highlight of the trip and a memorable moment from yet another great bull red season! Thank you DNR for a very reasonable slot limit on red drum keeping this species healthy and plentiful for South Carolina!
Pogies are nearly impossible in most cases. I’ve given up unless I luck into a ball of them but don’t have my hopes up and am not doing any searching from here on out.
Hope your trip went well. Great to see so many people on the water Friday and not shopping with the zombies.
Well, we covered a lot of water, but the reds were not cooperating. Did find some mullet for bait, but nothing was hungry. We fished the Tybee Jetties for bulls for about an hour just as the tide turned to come in. Saw a few marks on the sounder, but nothing was chewing. Decided to go inshore to do some scouting for the future. Fished up to almost high tide. Covered water, throwing Gulp on a jig and Trout Tricks. Also tried cut mullet on the bottom around larger oyster bars with deeper holes, but no luck.
I started to run offshore because the conditions were so perfect. Should have trusted my instincts.
All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.
Went yesterday, 12/18 with perfect weather. Water is still really cloudy. water temp still seems pretty warm for the time of year. Still found a couple trout when the water was up, then, finally, a decent sized school of 10-15 redfish. It was right at dusk and they were super spooky, but we did manage one. That guy went ballistic and scattered the rest and gave them lock jaw. we threw everything at them, mud minnow, swimming mullet, gulp on the bottom, even a top water plug. They literally swam around the bait. I hate that.
If we would have had a little more light, and time to let them calm down, maybe we could have caught a few more.
All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.
Thanks for the report. I have not fished since last Thurs. Big tides around at that time so I could understand the muddy water. No Trout but did catch several Redfish on the edge of the grass with Gulp shrimp dead sticked. Water temp was 60 on my machine so the water should clear soon.
