water temperature

Is the water too cold now to get anything from the surf?

Marty give it a little time. It’s the slow season right now. A red or two was landed in March of last year, and quite a few good size sharks were landed in April. The good news is that once it starts, opportunity to catch something will be around well into November. Just search the history of the forum and it’s a pretty good guide line of when to go, and what to target, and how to do that. Welcome to the site and good luck.

I’m headed out to Folly tomorrow. I’m sure the water temp is still too low right now but who knows, maybe I’ll hook something.
Can’t wait for it to warm up!

yes

The Rays should still be pretty thick in the surf zone, if you just want to catch something. I have not been out in a couple of weekends. Last trip out jameswebster came down and met us on IOP. Caught some Whiting, baby Black Drum and a couple Blues, no Rays that trip, which was odd…still something though. I surf fish year round, there is allways somethin’ bittin’ somewhere…just got to go find 'em. And yes, the water is COLD! Got chest waders? They work great!

Like dparker said, there’s always something. Should be able to get into some rays and maybe some whiting and when you get 70+ degree days in January you can’t beat some time on the beach with no tourists even if it is slow

Geez guys, thanks for the support. I thought February is the worst Month of the year to surf fish?

Well I fished the rocks on sully’s and the water was only a little warmer and caught a whiting and several small seabass, but the piers are free this time of year and at mount p they are catching trout and sheephead, and folly is catching some dogsharks but both places it is really slow and there is a good chance of not catching anything.

I appreciate all the information I usually go out on Sullivan’s and I have tried all the bait I can think of.Now I understand it just have to get further out in the water

I agree, February is probably the worst time to surf fish. But surf fishing in Feb is still better than not surf fishing in Feb!

Well said Mr. Skewer, nice buck the other day

I hit folly on Sunday and caught nothing. Not even a nibble as far as I could tell. Couldn’t even lose my bait.

Will be looking to get out and at least try to catch something this weekend if I don’t have to work. Anyone interested. If not anyone have any tips, I am interested in catching about anything from the beach.

Downtime normally I’d take you up on that as I try to get out most weekends but i have a small game trip planned.

Well aocasek let me know if you want to head out some other time, hope to meet up

Marty like I said it’s a tough time of the year to catch fish in the surf. I don’t mean to discourage you. Whether you catch them or not, you learn something every time you go out, good luck if you folks hit it. I saw you made a reference to what bait - shrimp always works. You also seemed to think you needed to cast far out, this is not true. Allot of fish are caught fairly close in to shore. Fishing is similar to real estate location, location, location. Where you fish on any given beach is a big part of it. All spots on the beach are not the same, some are much better than others. Look for differences in the landscape. A very good video to see to help identify where to set up on the beach can be found online. Look up Rich Trox identifying sand bars, troughs and cuts and this would help allot. Good luck, if y’all get into them give us a report

Same here, I was out Saturday morning on Folly and didn’t even have a bite. I let one bait soak for 2 hours and it came back untouched. Not even a crab was munching on the baits.

This is a good time of year to service your reels and organize your tackle bag.
