Watson higher ceiling than Winston?

Just curious what everyone thinks. As many of you know, I am a UGA fan so I have no dog in this fight - pun intended.

Clearly Winston doesn’t appear to be playing at the same level as last year but just by watching the Watson play this year he “looks” better than Winston did last year. Every part of his game is legit; scrambling, accuracy, touch, reading defenses, etc. No doubt he is a talented athlete, but does he have more potential than Winston?

It depends on whether he stays humble and focuses on improvement rather than what everybody is telling him externally.

I personally don’t think he is anywhere near his potential.

I did not watch Winston last year except in about 2.5 games. He was surrounded by a lot of good players. Watson has an okay O line, okay TE’s, inconsistent (but improving) receivers and an okay group of tailbacks. Winston had 1st round NFL talent in front of, behind and on his sides last year, and I am not sure about that this year- which could explain why he doesn’t look as good as last year.

Watson seems to be improving. What concerns me is the hype at this point in a season when it was not too long ago that coaches didn’t trust him to run the offense going into UGA. I feel like if someone can rise so fast, they can also fall fast.

I don’t think anyone reaches their potential in their freshman year. Watson has more to add in time.
Winston has more to add also, but his head is causing him issues.
This game takes much more than talent alone. If Watson keeps his head on right, I think his ceiling is higher

Watson is a well grounded kid that actually has some common sense to him. Winston has neither.

Winston hasn’t peaked yet and neither has Watson by a long shot. Watson still has a lot of growing to do physically, not sure on Winston.

I also think that Watson has a higher ceiling than JW and will grow and benefit from experience over the year. I understand why he didn’t start against Jawjer and played limited snaps but he seems to be the kind of player that excels in games moreso than practice.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Agreed. He seems to have a different attitude than Winston based on what we hear him say and what we know of his actions so far. That doesn’t mean he can’t make a dumb mistake though- when he thinks he can do no wrong.

Watson is making a lot more mistakes than people realize I think. His natural ability is making up for his errors.

The “superman” TD is a prime example. He made the wrong read, and then he hurtled the guy for 6 points. In practice, he would have done that, and as he quit running and had the DB break down on him short of tackling, a coach would have been scolding him.

This has happened in about 1 or 2 plays per quarter so far… but he’s got so much talent that you quickly get over the error.

It is going to be fun to watch him. Just hoping the program keeps him grounded, especially during tough times, which he hasn’t really seen yet (where he has to take blame for a loss as a leader). It is easy to lead when things are looking good.

I don’t think anyone doubted what you said, no one expected a true Freshman to be as good as he is at this point. That’s a pretty complex offense to pick up and run with even if he’s been running a variation for a while now.

I honestly figured that he’d be starting toward the end of the year, not the 4th game in.

He seems to be just as confident and calm in the pocket as winston with the same pinpoint accuracy. But his ability to scramble and/or run looks better so I do think he has a higher ceiling.

Even Jimbo said after the FSU game that Watson was ahead of Winston in Winston’s true freshman year.

As Phin said hope the hype does not get to his head.
