ways to kill red bugs. any suggestion ?

soaking in bleach water to kill red bugs.

put clear finger nail polish on each red bug.

By the time you feel it, it’s too late. They don’t burrow into the skin like I was always told growing up.

I rubbed hydrocortisone all over my legs the last time I got attacked. From my knees down was nothing but burning, itching red bumps. Seems like I went through a half dozen tubes of hydrocortisone. I had to reapply every two to three hours.

Sorry, brother. I know it sucks.

That is correct. The redness is left over after they’ve fed and died off. Treat the symptoms with anti itch cream.

Man, I had the worst case of chiggers I’ve ever seen exactly a year ago this month while putting up deer stands. Must’ve been standing in a nest or highly concentrated area because both feet were covered, and I mean covered! I had to wear sandals to work for two weeks because they couldn’t get air to dry out with regular shoes on…pretty sure I’d scratch the heck out of them while sleeping. Both feet have scars now. The only thing that provided temporary relief was rubbing bleach on them. Once the “red” appears, it’s too late (as Hoof mentioned).

Ohio, for fire ant bites, my family used to spray me with Right-Guard aerosol. It did seem to help, for whatever reason. Maybe I just stank and they were looking for an excuse to freshen me up, but either way I didn’t itch as much.

Back in Virginia I used to wear pantyhose during bow season to keep the chiggers away. I know it’s embarrassing but it’s still better than having those dang things!

growing up, mom always put us in a cold bath and that killed the chiggers/itch. the tap water here is not cold enough. its been many years, but id try that if i ever run into them again

I tried the nail polish thing.the wife didn’t have any clear though…RED WAS ALL I COULD FIND…forgot I had to go for a physical for work the next day.that was was fun explaining the red dots and they weren’t on my feet.there is a medicine for red bugs.it’s called CHIGGARD.only apply small drops like the instructions say.it will set you on fire.

If you don’t mind the chemicals, spray Lysol all over the area that has the bites. I’ve done the nail polish and other remedies. Swear by the Lysol.

I have used white vinegar. I’ll hold a paper towel dampened with
Vinegar for as long as I can on the chigger bites. It stings but it sure
knocks them out.

Like “diving underwear”, they aren’t pantyhose if you are using them for something cool. :sunglasses:

Haha I guess I could have worded it better… I would buy the knee high diabetic socks. We always called them pantyhose because it’s similar material

Pro Tip: Prevention is great, but not always possible. Best treatment I’ve found is soaking in the tub for an hour or so, in hot water. It softens the stylostomes, which are the source of the intense itching. The second night is usually the worst itching. I’ve had to soak twice, once before bed and once in the middle of the night after waking up itching (this is for when you get a couple hundred bites). But it REALLY works. In fact, while in the water the itching stops within a few minutes.

Try it. If it works as well for you as for me, you will be very relieved.

Of course you can and should treat with itch cream as well, but the soaking has made an absolute difference for me.
