Ed Gibbons (Partsman) passed away this morning in a car accident.
We were all suppose to go bottom fishing/diving this morning but I was unable to make it due to some commitments in the upstate. Chunky met Ed along with a few others at his parts store in Manning around 5am this morning. Ed mistakenly left the key to the store (where all the dive and fishing gear is kept) at home. Instead of running back home to find it them they called the trip until another day. Ed died in a single car accident on his way back to his house.
He was a great friend and the best fishing buddy you would ever want to have. He read this site daily and has been apart of numerous posts over the years. Ed lived his life wide open. Never a dull moment, always ready to go, always ready to push it to the limit. He fished hard, dove hard, and ran the boat like he stole it. He was one of those guys that refused to fail and loved watching others succeed. He had the “never give up mentality” in everything he did and always encouraged his family and friends to do the same. He was always up beat and I never saw him scared.
He would give you the shirt off his back and enjoyed fishing with any and everybody that would ride with him. He always had an assortment of characters on the boat but we always had fun. Even the tough days Ed made fun.
I will miss his phone calls and days on the water. I will miss hanging out at the parts store cleaning fish and talking trash about who was the better fisherman or diver, who had the baddest boat and truck. We cut up alot but when it came down to it there was never a doubt who would be there when you needed him or who would be ready to drop everything to take us out or ride along on a day off shore.
Here are a few pictures from over the years.
This is one of my favorites. We were bottomfishing one day and Ed hooked into a grouper that rocked him up. We all gave up on him and told Ed to cut the line. He refused, said he would get him out of the hole. After about 20 minutes o
Sorry to hear about your loss, He sounds like a heck of a good friend. Atleast we know he is in a better place now and still holding that bent rod with a huge grouper on the end, RIP
Was so very sorry to hear about this tragic accident. Lost a few good friends over the last year and it just plain sucks and hurts. My thoughts and prayers will be with his family and friends for thier tragic loss.
May he have tight lines, calm seas and the wind at his back for all eternity, God bless.
it is hard to find a true friend… so it make it that much arder when something like that happens… I am truley sorry but I am sure he is fishin at a serious honey hole.
May your reels continue to sing and your rods stay bent
I had the pleasure to meet and dive with Ed just a month ago, and he was a fun and great guy. Life is so short sometimes. This all comes as a total shock and very sad to hear. I can only imagine how empty his family is feeling without him right now. My prayers are with him and his family as well.
Man i just got back from Colorado so didn’t here about this till today. I just talked to ED fri we were working on a boat deal.
I’m so sorry to here about this and condolences to the family and friends. Ed was a great guy always a smile even when working and providing lightneng fasts parts service. As everybody knows he moved fast with limitless energy. His crazy exploits are legendary and will be told for entertainment for years to come.
You’ll be missed
