I don’t think I worded that well. I’m on your side the chance of catching that many fish is small. I’m in the same boat as you and am limited in the time to fish also. You followed the regulations and again nice catch !

Congrats on the 4 fish. That one dude has officially lost pro status and needs to borrow one of wildlifesecs Spiderman zebos and not fish with it till he finishes saving the world.
I like to snag them with the biggest treble hook I can find. The more babies inside, the better they taste… to my dogs at least. I don’t like to eat them.
Good job on the Cobia Charles!
Just pulled the popcorn out of the Microwave:stuck_out_tongue:…Good one Blair as well.
I won’t participate in a pissing match about this but Twins hit the nail on the head IMO.

xxmadfox,
First off whether its my .02 or 1.00 I can express my opinions however i’d like to. Where in my post did I criticize anyone? I simply stated I see no reason to kill 4 fish. I guess I ruffled your feathers a bit. I certainly dont fish every day and have the oppertunity to fish that much. Great Job RN, maybe madfox will be happy now. I am well aware of the rules and regulations that are over our waters. There are some I dont agree with like others, BSB closure is ridiculous IMHO but can I not say that? Just like the cobia limits, I believe they should be 2 per boat. There are plenty that agree with me on that issue but I guess that upsets people.
As for the Mahi issue, thats not even in the same realm as the cobia fishery.
PRO,
People get upset but why? Perhaps because they know its wrong. They don’t want to be held accountable anymore. All we have to do is look at how ridiculuous the BSB has become. If we mis-manage the cobia, guess what - the FEDS will come in and take it away too. Perhaps they will decide to have all inshore boats be equiped with VMS so that they can better monitor the cobia? If we just harvest to our hearts content and neglect the future, we are no better than the Chinese and the Japanese when it comes to fishing. Fish for today who cares about tomorrow.
Great job on the fish, I am jealous as I have not been able to get out yet.
When I look at limits the problem I see in SC is that the limits are set by legislators not the experts that know what is going on with the fishery. Having heard the folks at the Waddell Mariculture Center talk about this topic on several occasions I would encourage all to try and get to one of these talks. I think it would give us all some better understanding of our fishery. I will say that I really enjoy eating cobia, but I do think about the future of our fishery…don’t know the answers, but think it is important to all of us to be as informed as possible.
Congrats on a truly memorable day!

How do we know that he didn’t release the last 4 legal cobia he caught before this trip? Or what if he releases the next 4 legal cobia he catches? I don’t know the man, but I’m not ready to assign blame to the guy for keeping his legal limit of cobia. Aren’t cobia stocks evaluated like other species, so that the limits can be adjusted to protect the cobia from overfishing?
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Dang man, it’s not killed… it’s harvested,
Great day Reel Nauti! Yea I’m jealous, but happy for you! Mid weeks the best way to stay away from the crowds.
Edit… Please don’t let one mean spirited comment keep you from posting pictures for the rest of us that aren’t out there.
Does anyone know how much it cost to raise one cobia fingerling at the Waddell center? My two cents tells me that we should have to purchase Cobia tags to support future stocks. Second to dolphin cobia are thought to be one of the fastest growing fish, Florida studies suggest they grow about 11 lbs a year. With tags a portion could go to DNR and the remaining be used for further stocks.
Thoughts.
I can say that I do not like the idea of two fish per boat. I believe limits could remain the same and we add more fish stocks.
I just do not know what the current status of the stocks are, or how much it costs to raise them, but I do know that it is a unique subset of fish that come up into the Broad, and I also know that limits are more of a political issue than based on the status of the population. In SC the legislature sets the limits on fish in the state, not DNR or the experts in fisheries biology. I am not against people keeping fish by any means, I just want to make sure that we maintain our unique fishery for these fish, so that we can keep cobia to eat 10-20-30 years from now. I think that bag limits should be adjusted based on the status of the fishery, not the politics in Columbia is all I am saying.

Great catch man. I definitely fall in the jealous category. BTW, I think it would be awesome if you PM’d all of us nice people a detailed report… just sayin’.
PRO my problem is not with you as a person or with your opinion of the limits. My problem is when the OP kept his legal limit of fish and you said we’ll then let’s just kill them all insinuating that he is taking advantage of the fishery… Basically stating that was he did was wrong and un acceptable in your eyes. He did nothing wrong…

Keep it Awesome!!!
That was funny
If I had 2 or 3 people on the boat who wanted some steaks, I’d pack those 4 fish in the box and put out the baits for number 5 On the other hand, if it’s just my son and me, or my wife and me, we keep one and release the rest. No need to be greedy, but no reason not to take what you can use within the law either. It’s a reasonable limit.
Cobia are extremely fast growing and are raised in aquaculture in many places around the world. One of my best friends is the director of aquaculture at the University of Florida, and he has set up cobia farms in many countries.
Nothing wrong with our cobia population. I’ve been fishing them for 50 years and it is no worse than ever and probably even better, considering the increased pressure.

Great catch and great to see them show up. Always appreciate a REPORT for a change, so thanks.
Like Larry said above, I think Cobia are a close second to dolphin in their potential to be a sustainable fishery. They reach something like 30-40" in 3 yrs. Personally, I only keep what my family will eat no matter what I’m fishing for. When I catch one keeper cobia I’m done keeping for the year. But will happily fish for more and hopefully get one for a guest on the boat to keep!

I think the bottom line is as long as there was more than one person on that boat the man is PERFECTLY LEGAL! 2 cents or not Pro when you start off with a comment like " I don’t see the need to kill 4 of them", then you should expect someone to come out swinging. I think congratulations are in order rather than criticism. <--------- but that is just my 2 cents. Great catch brother!! Keep the pics coming because it looks like I won’t be taking any of my own pictures ANY TIME SOON!!
