I got together with the Parkers for a final trip to the bar. We headed out early Saturday morning with gear in hand hoping for a few fish. With it being the end of the season expectations were low, but we were grateful for the opportunity, and were going to do our best. The day started with several minor problems. From flat tires on the golf cart, no bait to be had, and some home repair issues that David gave a hand with. We knocked them out and pushed forward. The weather was beautiful with a great cloud cover and foggy mist in the air. It looked nice and fishy with good clean water and currents to work with throughout the day. By the time we got rigged up, our bar started to expose itself and we knew we needed to take a swim to get to the the fish. Through the trough we go. As soon as we reached the bar and and began casting the Whac-a-mole began. We put up 5 reds in a matter of minutes. With the quick showing of good numbers of fish we felt like the record day of 13 reds was within sight. Unfortunately as soon as it started, it came to an abrupt halt like someone had thrown a lite switch. Low tide was nearing and the bite shut down for 2 hours. Tide turned and began rolling back in and so did the fish. We had about 4 hours before we would be forced off the bar and would have to make our way back to land. We ended up tying the record with some last minute pops of fish and were left with no choice to but to head back to shore. Dam close again, but we had to roll. We got back to land and refused to walk away. We needed just one more fish. We worked the trough up front which has produced very little reds for us, mostly whiting and such. The good Lord blessed us with two more reds putting us over the current record of 13. We ended the day with 15 small to medium sized reds, a bunch of monster whiting, a weakfish, a black drum and several rays. Cut bait produced nothing. They only hit shrimp. I’m giving the surf a rest for the winter. The polar bear run is done. God Bless and take care folks. Seems to be a few fish
Nice report Pete. Glad y’all got out there One Mo Time.
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”, but really, who cares?
Will miss the trough crossings with you Pete until next season. You’ll have to join me at the Black Drum hole next trip.
The wife got some nice pics of the last crossing…the Coast Guard stopped by to make sure we were okay

Thanks for the post and pics! You guys rock> Dang just floating your whole cart over. I would for sure have to know they were there to make that cold swim - my old ass can’t handle the cold like I use to. If only there were more beaches with bars! Hard to find now days - most around here flat as a pancake. OBX is last place I went where it’s not hard to find one.

Excellent post.
Thank you folks for your posts. Unfortunately I did some digging and we only pulled a personal best tie of 15 reds back in November of 2015. Our work is not done Mr. Parker. Sorry for moving the goal post on you:smiley:

David…just a quick note to let you know I appreciate all of the pointers this year. I never got into the bulls but did catch a few 25-28 inchers. You made an otherwise tough 7 months much more bearable. Pop passed away last week so I am in the process of packing my gear and heading back to Columbia on Sunday. I was hoping to catch you on the beach but never did. Tell your wife bye from me and Ragz. You two are the true definition of “good people”!!! Hope you have a great winter.
Tom
Sad news to hear Tom. We will keep you guys in our thoughts. Next time we are in Columbia or Lexington, we’ll have to get together. I’m planning to fish IOP this comming Sat. A.M.
Thank you for all of your posts. I have learned a ton from this forum and will continue to check throughout the winter as I hope some of you will go out anyway.
You can’t catch a fish if your line isn’t in the water.
