Well, decided to take the whole family out past the jetties today. My wife and three kids. I wanted my wife and kids to see what it was like on a nice day out there. So, we packed up, called my brother-in-law and his kid to come along, and we left the hill at about 11 a.m.
The water was laid down, like a foot or so on the waves, tiny chop, from the light breeze, just bee-utiful. We first went to the nearshore reef. Set up four rods out the back, and no sooner do I get my sandwich in my hands to start eating lunch, two of the rods bent over. My wife reeled in her first bsb!! It was good action on bsb’s and a few fish that I’ve not been able to identify yet. I didn’t get to eat my lunch for like an hour, because the bite was so good on this spot. The kids were having a blast, but no keepers, obviously. However, they all caught a bunch of fish. It was so great.
We then moved to the dumping area south of the channel. I’m not sure what the real name of this area is, so forgive me. There was a spot there that I’ve caught keeper bsb’s at before, still had it marked on the GPS, so away we went. Motored over there, got to the spot, figured out the drift, set up four rods again, and BAMM!! right off the bat, two keepers at 14". A few more passes yielded more bsb’s, but only one more keeper, just over 12".
All day long we were using frozen mullet, chopped into chunks on single and double rigs, with 2 oz. of weight. I had squid on the boat for bait as well, but never touched it. The mullet was working so well.
We headed back to shore, to a much windier day than we had started out with, and got back to the hill at about 4:30.
Oh, it’s worth mentioning that my brother-in-law had something bite at the nearshore reef, fought it for about 10 minutes, only to get snagged on something on the bottom. The line broke, at the hook on the bottom rig, so we think he had a nice shark that dove to the bottom for some cover. We were anchored, and the fish took line off the spool for the first five minutes
