Seems to me, in my stage on dementia, that there was discussion some time back about soaking a net in something! Can’t remember what it was! Anyone?
5 gal bucket full water, and a capful of your old ladies fabric softener.

I do the same as Poke. I use Downy fabric softener because that is what wifey keeps on hand. Don’t let the rope get in the bucket, or it will be slick as eel spit. Put a weight of some sort on top of the net to keep it submerged. Another 5 gal bucket with some water in it works.

And, oh yeah, never ever put Downey in the water when you are taking a tub bath!

Can’t remember for sure but its been told that fabric softener or something like that causes weak knots in the net.
When I purchased my net from Tim Wade, he recommended putting it in a trash bag with a shot of water from a water hose. Tie it up and leave it in the sun all afternoon.

I find that the fabric softner doesn’t help new nets, and may even, as Goob said, do some minor damage. But, when a net gets a few years old and is not opening like it used to, the Downey trick makes the net more flexible and helps it to open better.

I talked with Tim Wade about this when I ordered my net from him and he explicitly said not to use fabric softener on cast nets.
The reason was it will cause the knots to slip more easily.
The nets I use it on are old “backup” nets that are getting so stiff that they won’t open properly. There is nothing to lose. “Softening” them allows them to be used an extra year or two. I haven’t noticed knots slipping on the old nets. But, I am sure Tim is right - softening a new new would cause slippage.
I usually order a new Tim Wade net every year, but maybe not this year as I am po/broke. There is no need to do anything to new nets - they open great as is.
