In other words happy bob,i need to stay off the water because I tell it like it is.67% of fishermen use j hooks,I suspect most of them also throw away perfectly good fish that die…Just is so stupid to require 67% of us to kill fish and throw them away…COMMON SENSE.
They dont make hooks that cant kill fish!I am not quitting fishing just hating the silly laws.
Actually I wish 95 % of the fishermen practiced all catch/release.then it would be much easier to catch more.
In all honesty I have probably released 9 out of every ten reds that I have caught…The problem here is i am the only one admitting all those released fish DO NOT SURVIVE>

If you can’t catch fish without killing the majority of them, then you are doing something wrong. Change your techniques, change your hooks(no stainless or plated hooks). No one is forcing you to kill any fish to get keepers. You sir, are the one who must change. I fish, and I catch and release, and I am willing to bet that 90% of all the fish I release live to be caught another day.
Give it a rest toppyblue and change the way you fish. Simple as that. I, for one, am tired of your rants.
Thank you and have a nice day.

LOL! Just remember, Toppy, when I post a video of accurately catching, measuring with a pinched tail, and safely releasing it, you have to eat crow! You promised!
I just wasted 20 minutes reading 4 pages of crap! Toppy you have to be punking someone right? You can’t be serious about this redfish molestation bull. Confess and be done
jimminy crickets…I wasted an hour or so loosely reading the other “locked” thread and now it looks like this one is headed the same direction. Sure can tell it’s wintertime around here.
Seems to me that this toppyblue guy thinks that he is the expert on everything, his is the only opinion that matters…and he’ll post that many times over 14 pages just to prove it! Never mind what anyone else says or even what the guys and girls over at DNR, that have degrees and years of experience, have done to give us a great fishery. I’ve been around this place for a few years now and these types come and go, usually with a “I’m outta here” post which really means “I’m going to lurk and throw darts at the pictures of all the guys that ate my lunch on all the things I was really right about.” It does liven up the wintertime months but as someone famous once said…you can’t argue with stupid or liberals". I admire those that keep trying but you’ll never convince this guy that anything they say or do is wrong. The rule about having to quit fishing after you have caught X limit of redfish made me spew coke over my keyboard…what if I wanted to catch trout or flounder and a redfish bit my hook. Would I get a ticket for not knowing it was a redfish? The other gem was the “natural way to catch a redfish”. I would say more bait fishermen are guilty of gut hooking than anyone using a jighead, plug or fly. I’m sure I’m not the first to post this but those latter three require actively setting the hook at the bite. Throwing a piece of bait on the bottom and letting it get to his crushers before you set the hook is much more likely to result in hooking him deep. I don’t begrudge anyone else their way of fishing but don’t tell me mine is wrong. I’ll check in on this one just to see how long it lasts and when we might get the “I’m outta here” post. Hopefully it won’t be long if he can’t find a way to get along with the rest of us.

I will but what if the dolphins are around???maybe it is too cold for them now…Several times I have had one come to the boat begging for fish…What would be the chances of a released red or anything outrunning one of those guys???
By the way optiker,I was wondering how many reds a dolphin eats per day???Any data on that??Those guys seem plentiful, also wondering if the redfish population is relative to their presence?? I know they love mullet but mullet disappear(migrate)…reds dont migrate.
Thanks in advance,Toppy

toppyblue, I ONLY use j-hooks. And I fish 4-6 days a week (mostly surf/bottom bait) during spring and summer. Both salt and fresh water. And it is very very VERY rare that I foul hook fish. If you have trouble foul hooking fish, as stated before, maybe you need to change your tactics/rigging or get more pratice. Also your statment about 1-2 year old red drum and the Aug. spawn makes no sense. Reproducing reds are 3-5 (female) years old and well over 23". How can there be more keepers in Oct.? Oct. is when I/we catch the biggest ( bulls) of the year. Usually 30"+ ? Also get us some pictures of all those fish you are killing, seems to me all you have shown here is you have too much time to sit around and complain about… well everything. I mean really?..really…

I do not have a problem with how anyone fishes! I especially like you guys that catch/release. It definitely helps the population of reds…Targeting the breeders(release or not) surely can’t help the population!! I just read an article where reds spawn for about 5 weeks and spawn every 3 days with 1.5 million eggs per spawn…That’s right over a 5 week period one large female can “lay” 20MILLION or more eggs! Molesting/harming just one seems counterproductive…Then targeting them during spawning season(when they are close to shore) really is counterproductive. But if you choose to do this then attack me you will be exposed for what you are doing.
As far as catching a stray red while targeting other fish, certainly that will happen. And no,it would not be and should not be “enforceable”.Responsible fishermen would just stop targeting the reds.Usually when I find a good red spot there are seldom other fish there when the reds are biting(feeding".

As far as dnr goes, they are necessary but not god.The legislature sets the laws and dnr enforces them.DNR does not like that, ask them.
If my saying there are plenty of reds out there and the limits should be relaxed offends folks just look at their motivation. My little trips and few fish are not ever gonna be a problem for reducing the reds.My being forced by law to catch 20 in order to keep 3 is the problem…useless killing of fish for an assanine law meant to protect but actually hurts…I see it, I experience it and it is rediculous.
All the attacks are simply countered and the squealers just resort to name calling??? Should I just stop fishing???And just let the fantasy world folks keep on
Well. you are catching bull(breeders) when they move in to spawn…Targeting the breeders!
Makes no sense??? They spawn in august, the next august they are 13 inches long,by october they should be about legal size at 14 months, then by the time they are two years old they are beyond the 23 inch limit…Then they hang around until three years old and go offshore to join the spawning population…(if they survive the catch/release thingybob)
The reason I use the 2/0 Gamakatsu is it catches more fish per bite than other hooks I have tried. It is a redfishe’s nature to inhale the bait…I do gut hook some and know that most likely they will not make it.That sir was just an opinion until I read the research…Seems most die because of internal organ damage thru the gut wall by the point of the hook…This happens long before any hook could “dissolve”.
Thanks for your comments, but targeting breeders needs to stop.

This is an example of one that is just a little too big. It stayed there nice and still so I could take its picture, and then, he went back in the drink. And, it swam off without a scratch.

Breeder reds are all over the artificial reefs right now. Took some clients Monday morning and ended up with 47 BULL reds over 36 inches long. The biggest was 48 inches and 57 lbs. All caught on 1 ounce Strike King TourGrade RageBlades bumped slowly along the bottom. Molesting BULL reds is da bomb!
HHOoo HHuummm this has become boring Good night fairyland.

Hmmm…it even has pictures. Yeap, it looks pretty simple. If there is any doubt, I just put them back. It’s not worth the effort, the fine, or the trouble.
And in case you like the video version of how to measure a fish:
I have never had any use for AR style rifles or hand guns. I like bolt actions for precision and shot guns for utility. Now that the gun debate is raging, I want a bunch of AR rifles and hand guns–just because. I usually stay in the creeks where it is rare to catch redfish over 35"–give or take. I never cared much about catching 40-50lbs redfish. Most of that was because I did not have the boat to do it. Now I do. I think I’ll go target some breeders now too–just because–when I get back.

Hi Happy BOB well, First you said I MUST change. Now you are saying I NEED to change??? as far as the 90%of released fish die(you must have dreamed that). My statement was more on the line I need to catch 10 to keep one(thus 30 caught to keep 3 within the limits). Some of those 27 released will not make it.All the ones gut hooked will die.
By your own admission if 10% of My released fish die, that would be
a total of 5.7 fish killed to keep 3.My estimate is a little higher because I use small hooks(2/0) which makes it more likely to gut hook…
You saying that no more than 10% of the fish you release die is a tremendous declaration…Finally someone on here admits that released fish die.
