what is the bigest mistake you made on a trip

What items or item should you have taken on your fishing / camping trip? What was the biggest mistake you made on your trip. I went on a week long canoe trip in the Boundary Waters… I should have taken dry weather bags to keep my sleeping bag and, clothing In. The first night I sleep in wet clothing and a very wet sleeping bag. The first night was very wet cold and long. I was very lucky the next day the sun and very warm temperatures allow me to dry out all my wet clothing. The trip was in the middle of July, the time of year was a big help for my oversight if we had wet or cold weather all week I would have had a very bad trip.

ive been the to boundry waters…very isolated and dont care to do that again.

1998…Morehead City,NC. It was my first kingfishing trip on a new-to-me boat with my cousin who had never been offshore…

We got about 5 miles outside the inlet and realized the tackle bags were still in the back of the truck.

shrimp baiting: made bait balls at home, left bait balls at home

a few years ago when I first found artificial ballyhoo. I got a jug of menhaden oil and soaked the ballyhoo the night before the trip. I rigged one up and droppd it back. At the same time another line went down. My brother realed in the fish, I grabbed the gaff and on the strike of the gaff to the fish the gaff slid effortlessly out of my hand and into 350+ feet of water. realizing it was our only gaff my brother jumped in and caught it before it went down too far. I still catch hell for making my bro go swimming. Since then he made a “special” gaff for me. The handle has grip tape gorilla glued from one end to the other with a small buoy on the blunt end.

If you’re not effecting the world around you in a positive manner…you’re taking up too much space.

Taking friends to my most productive spots…that own boats

  1. Stranded in the mud with the wife on board. Any other passenger would have been better in those particular circumstances.

  2. Stranded in the mud with my nephew on board. If we would have left him home, act 1 (above) could have been a lot more fun.

Not fishing related but generally the same principal. I hiked through the woods and swamp behind my house to a creek/ beaver swamp. I got there got situated threw out several decoys and realized I left my shells in the truck. By the the time I would have gotten to them the hunt woulda been over. Sometimes you gotta learn lessons the hard way… mombakc a friend of mine set the hook on a rod once and sent the gaff flying out the boat and into the blue… only gaff we had as well and I too went swimming. I got back in the boat and he said man yur crazy there are things in the water that will eat you! I said I know don’t let it happen again lol

Packing up wife, coolers, camping gear, fishing poles, dog, and making it 25 miles south of Charlotte before the trailer hub decided it didnt like the bearings any more.

Pretty sad turning it around and limping home (tandem trailer), and then working on bearings all weekend. Not nearly the fun I thought I was going to have!

So, relying on the bearing buddies was my mistake!

owned by trailer bearings…

Hiked in to woods about a mile to fish. Got lure caught in bush. I can get it I thunk. I did get it back with treble hook in finger. No dikes to cut hook off. Long hike back to dikes and doc to remove hook.

When fishing out of murrels inlet thunderstoms in area. We will have to keep eye on weather got about 3 mile out. Opps this don’t look good. Longest 3 miles rollercoast ride in history.

Out of murrel inlet again it foggy but we have nav aids shoud burn off soon. Get out but we are not where we should be. nav. aid has fail use. Head west yong man. Finaly find wild life pontoon boat some where near 3 mile reef. Ask where are we. They look at use as if we are mad. Found later that nav aid ant. had corrsion under threads.

Don’t leave brain at home.

Parked my truck at K mart to go get some hooks.Came back about 30 minutes later and all my tackle was stolen.Had roofers at my house and lost 2 rigs.Had one tt26 left and the trout were just going crazy with it.Let a buddy use my rig to catch some and he got excited and threw the whole rig over the side took an hour to cast and get it back.New 2500 Shimano.Friend had a condo on a hot spot creek.I went early one Dec morning.Forgot He had an alum ramp.It was dark and I did not see the ice.Hit the ramp and wound up overboard.Worst was try to get back up the ramp to the warm car.Ever try crawling up a slipper wet ramp.I am sure i will do more stupid stuff before I am dead.

Man, I must be way behind the curve…

Was working my way through a deep creek in the swamp in J-bote when overhanging large vine stole my s-gun, sent it to the bottom. Worked for well over an hour w/ a bungee hook, string, and small weight to finally hook on the sling. Almost went swimming but got lucky.
Of course the gun was pointed ‘right at me’ when it broke the surface!![:0]

Was headed home from fishing a small coastal creek, and I mean you can only get to it, or back out of it via going through the breakers…made my turn to head back into the main cut, but tide was still too low and at the last minute I saw my mistake. Tried to turn that Heavy-Ole Dixie boat back seawards, but the next wave sucked the front end into the wave. Thought the boat was going over, so I dove out(Was alone) to the side and rear. Well I have to guess that was just enough to help keep it from flipping over, so there it ran in a circle in the breakers, and there I swam. Finally/slowly made my way back to inside rear of the still underway and sharp turning boat, kept my legs in ‘tight’ and managed to hit the throttle then knock it out of gear. Climbed back abord, luckily first pull got it started and I made way into deeper water to bail out the almost sunk boat. When I finally looked up/around me, I saw a local shrimp boat draggin’ right off the beach, approx 600-800 yards away.
I’m sure he enjoyed the event:wink:

Was in Beaufort river shrimping-Got a late start-Saw one last good place to set up and told my partner if he’ll nudge us up to the bank I’d jump out and get a couple of poles in to mark our strecth. He nudged into the bank, I jumped out…Slip/Splat right on my back. We laughed all night on that one.

Was duck hunting several years ago in the ocean, had my last string of dekes set out and was tying on the single large weight while looking behind the J-bote. All of a sudden a 5-6 foot shark(Mako I believe by head’s shape) came rocketing out of the water directly at me. My life stood still, everythi

I was living in Maryland and had a brand new 2003 Bayliner 18’ ski boat. We had my inlaws onboard and decided to follow another boat through a shortcut passed an island to our destination. The tide was low and I mangled the prop on a submerged log. I was stuck floating with the grumpy inlaws for about an hour before Sea-Tow arrived and towed us back to the marina. I guess I should have paid more attention to the boat I followed. It was a bass boat that only drew a few inches of water. :frowning:

A bad day of fishing Beats a good day at work

Leaving the dock.

Biggest mistake I made was taking the wife…she is bad luck when it comes to fishin.

All fishermen are liars except for you and me, and to tell you the truth brother, I’m not sure about you!

running aground in the ten thousand islands backcountry at dusk. on an outgoing tide. Ole Rich Moore was with me and it was so windy that the shallows weren’t visible. It was the worst kind of mosquito hell I have ever been a part of. We had to don foul weather gear and grocery bags on our heads. Rich smoked cigs and they covered up the white part entirely.

Taking someone out who cant control their alcohol consumption while on a boat.
