Went out to the 4ki from steamboat today. Caught a bunch of baby black sea bass, and a few keepers. We caught a lot of these fish and didn’t know what they were. I’m going to try to posy a pic, but I’m a newb and this may not work.
That is an Atlantic Bumper. Perfect match to the picture on the dnr fish id link. From the dnr homepage go to fish and then choose saltwater and you should see the link for the fish id. They use real pictures, not artist drawings to id the fish.

Ringtail
Can somebody tell my why last year cudas would hang out under the boat while we were spade fishing and not touch the spades but gobble these up if they got close?
We call them spot tailed porgy or spot tailed pinfish. They are considered trash fish by some but they are not bad table fare. They make great live bait if they are small enough.
Thanks for the info. I think next time I’ll have to see what one tastes like.
Sorry for the first reply. This is definitely a ringtail. The Bumper does not get as big and the spot does not extend all the way to the bottom.
couple weeks ago, fried up some seabass and ringtail. Ringtail was nasty compared to the seabass, wont try it again
