what kayak is best?

I am looking to get a kayak for fishing but there are 2 many to choose from. I am looking for something not to long but able to stand up in on a flat, easy to fish out of and dry enough to fish in the winter. I also would like to duck hunt out of it (green, brown or camo). I would appreciate any advice anyone has. Oh and not to much $$ 500 to 850 range.

That’s a tough set of criteria. Not too long and stable enough to stand in I’d vote for a Ride 135. It’s probably one of the best fishing platforms on the market. IMHO it is not he quietest or the easiest paddling sit on top tho.

Next choice (for me) would be a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 or a Native Ultimate. Native has THE BEST SEAT EVER.

As for being dry in the winter. Wear waders, a belt, jacket/ dry top and your PFD.

So much water, So little time

ocean kayak drifter might be what you are looking for

I have a WS Tarpon 140. You can stand in it with practice, though I mostly fishing sitting. It is very dry with scupper plugs and paddles excellent with a rudder.

You need to talk with DolphinD on here. He is the manager at Time Out. He sells great fishing kayaks. If I were to buy another kayak it would be a Hobie Revolution or Adventure but if you want to hunt out of it then you certainly want something with a wider beam like the Wilderness Systems “Ride.” That is actually the yak DolphinD paddles. If I were to buy a paddle kayak then I would go with the ride. The only draw back to larger yaks like the ride is that they are going to be slower but I think he ride is faster than most wide yaks.

All good advice F&G. The Ride is faster than say an OK Drifter, OK Big Game, or Mainstream Kingfish.

I’ve paddled 22 different yaks this summer alone. Some just a day or two, others a couple of weeks, and 3 at least 50 miles each. The Ride gets my vote for best all around.

thanks guys for all the info and advice. I did talk to dolphin d the other day at time out and i think i am going to go with the Native Ultimate with bow and stern skirts. I just have to save up now.

The only thing I don’t like about the Ultimate is there are no scupper holes. If you get water inside the only way you get it out is by a small bucket. I fished one one time and loved the seat. Other than that I like the Ride 135.
Either way you will love it and be doing some good fishing out of it.

F&g yea i am with you on the water issue but i looked on the website and in the accessory section they have a stern skirt a bow skirt and a center skirt so if you are in rough water you can put the skirts on. The fact that it is not self bailing was my only issue between it and the 13 Ride but the skirts won me over.

But what if you have a crate mate or tackle box? The skirts will get in the way.

they should fit under the skirts shouldn’t they? one other thing i liked was the channel around the outside that things can lock onto.
that will make it easy for me to attach grass to it for hunting.

Hmmm, with all this interest lately in yak fishing, maybe I ought to get the foam blocks and hot wires and start carving a new ultimate fishing kayak out. (Designed a lot of the ones ya’ll use now)
Getting input from serious yak fisherman before was tough because there weren’t a lot of folks fishing from yaks then.

I use to kayak fish and having my stuff under a cover such as a crate mate with rods will make your fishing very unproductive. I am not trying to rain on your parade because i am not. Just trying to help you think of every little thing before you drop a lot of money on a boat. I wish someone would have done the same for me. You may even want to put a fish finder and scotty mount/ ram mount rod holders but with the skirts on that won't be possible. I could be wrong.

reddrum,
I’ll put you on a Tarpon 120 w/ PFD and paddle for $600. Got too much stuff hanging around the house lately. 3 kayaks is probably too many.

So much water, So little time

I appropriate the input f&g thats the reason for my post I want you to challenge my thoughts because my mind starts going in one direction and i don’t think about the other side and then i sink a lot of money in to something i am not happy with. keep it coming. I haven’t kayaked a lot, I have a 9’ ride on top mainstream Jazz (probably not the best to compare with) but it is wobbly and wet. In your experiences (number of times you are on the water) how often do you think i would need to put the skirts on if i went with the native?

yellow. I wish it was camo, then it would stay and my BRIGHT BLUE </font id=“blue”> yak would go away.

looks a lot like this stok photo

Green sand or camo is a must I have a bright blue kayak already and it is very difficult to hunt out of i made a burlap cover to go over it and its a pain in the a** to hunt out of. I did like the new 09 tarpon though have you seen it they made it wider.
