What Reel To Buy

In the market for a good grade surf/pier reel setup. What would you guys recommend? Targeting reds in the surf, sharks, etc.

I use an Okuma Salina now and couldn’t be happier with that reel. Should I just go with another one of these or am I missing out something better.

Would like to keep my reel cost somewhere around $100.

Thanks in advance for any input

The Salina is like $160 right??? Pick up an old spinfisher 650-850 SS . Can always get parts and keep it working for forever.

2nd on the Penn. Can’t beat them. Also, look at the shimano baitrunners and daiwa bg series

Ya know, it must be nice living in Neverneverland. Remind me to come visit you, when I need a break from reality.

3nd on the Penn. I have 2 6500SS and a 750SS I’ve been using in the surf for about 15 years.

Def. Penn either the last series or the current series.

I got some old penn slammer’s that held up a long time, one of two finally has an issue. I did some upgrading last year and went with 2 Cabo 80’s for reds and smaller sharks-blacktips. Two 120’s for big sharks. The 80 is the same size reel as the 60 just holds more line. Only one and half seasons use, but heavy use in the surf. Great red reel. All 4 cabo’s still feel like the day I bought them, I don’t feel any grit whatsoever, the drags are like butter and super powerful. Very happy thus far. Great reviews as well. You should search Alan Hawks reel reviews. He’s highly respected, impartial, and does a great job. The Cabo 80 runs 187 from amazon. Alan Hawk recently reviewed the Diawa BG sw and loved it. They run about a hundred bucks. He said it is the best reel, for the money, sold today. Check out his reviews -great read.

Or I will sell you a brand new Cabo 65 pts in box with fresh 50# blue spider wire for $150. Can’t vouch for it as I have never used one before but it seems nice and dparker is a fan I think?

Funny we were typing at the same time. I can vouch for it  Mr. Parker and Cracker Larry like them too. Wheres the shimano fans, the spheros is a nice reel too. Fully sealed. Great reviews, but are not cheep, and capacity is low. Go Cabo!

If I were a betting man, I would put my Boca 50’s (old style) against any current Penn spinners in the 5500-7500 class. As far as the Cabos?..no Penns come close…at a comparable price point. Slammer III would be close, Torque…totally different class of reel and expensive.

If I was forced to try another brand spinner for “Surf Fishing”, I would try Fin Nor or Okuma over Penn anyday…not hatin’ just sayin’. I’ve had a few Penn saltwater spinners over the years…not a fan.

All kidding aside, if you have some older Penn spinners, ss700-722, 420-850ss they are good reels. Seems though the ssg, ssm, ssv series have lost something.

And those Cabo 120’s could probably haul your wifes car out of the surf [:0]!!!

Good news the boca is now on the list:smiley: Regarding the 120’s totally agree it’s a beast-65lb drag will easily pull her Yugo to shore, as long as she’s not in it. If she’s in it, expect a bite off. She’s only 3 feet tall, but boy is she capable of biting through a steel liter. A tiger shark ain’t got chit on her. I have to go now here she comes, you do know she beats on me Mr. Parker. Go Cabo:smiley:

I have a fin nor 4000 and 6000 reel for sale. I will take $130 (for both) and that includes shipping. the 4000 is about a year old and has a mixture of braid/mono line on it. i purchased the 6000 a year ago and had an issue with it. the rep replaced the reel and i have not used it yet. i kept the 6000 spool from the other reel because it had braid on it and i did not want to trash it. if you are interested, let me know. I’m sure Mr. Parker can tell you that i’m an honest guy and won’t sell you junk equipment. if you need pics, pm me

I have a Penn 8500ss that’s held up for years! It’s been put through alot of stress. It’s caught 4 footers all the way up to 7 foot Lemon Sharks and it’s still getting it done!

I have a penn sargus 7000 i’ll sell for cheap. Cosmetically is doesn’t look good as paint flaked off, but works great. Just caught a 100 lb tarpon on it. Will sell for $30. Spooled with 50 lb braid.

I’ve got a Penn Slammer Combo Penn with a Spinfisher Metal 750 SSm w/ 7’ Penn Slammer Rod (15-30lb) that’s never seen the water that I’m looking to sell. Sadly, it is not going to get use with me…
