What should I put on....

I have an idea, and Mike at Chas Angler gave me some great suggestions, but I wanna hear from some of you guys and gurls…

What reel should I put on a G-Loomis Greenwater 6-12lb 7’ medium-light Mod-fast action, 1/4-1/2oz rod.

Im torn between a Battle, Stradic Fj, or the Stradic ci-4, or even a like new but used sustain.

Stradic. Either of them.

I think that with either the Battle or Stadics you can’t go wrong. I have a Battle 3000 and a Stradic FJ 2500 and I personally like the Battle more. The drag on that thing is super smooth and could stop a train. I caught a 15 lb 'cuda with it and it handled that fish easily - and they pull drag WAY faster than the best red i have ever caught

You can buy a $600 driver and still not be able to hit it down the middle. Any reel in the $75-$150 range is fine. Unless you are trying to keep up with the Joneses. If you are then go with the Sustain, Stella or get a Van Staal.

Shimano Symetre if it were my money because I can’t tell much of a difference between it and a Stradic, but then again you’ve already got a G-Loomis so it’s not like you can’t afford the others.

I know the $$ difference is a fair amount, but personally a stradic CI4 would be first choice. I just look at it as you have an extremely light physical weight rod, might as well put an extremely light-weight reel with it IMO…the battle’s are a great reel but are a good bit heavier. Thats a great trout action rod, put a light-weight reel with it and it will quickly become your favorite to fish with.Hope this helps, and as you can see their are a lot of good options to go with!

I think I wanrt to keep the CI-4 I already have on my MoJo Inshore St Croix. So Im really torn between the FJ or Battle right now.

Just because someone owns expensive gear does not mean they can afford it. Maybe it was a gift. Several of my most expensive setups were gifts, or bought from gift cards. However, yes I would rather spend money on setups I know are going to last me longer than the average Wal-Mart special for $19.99. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. I have the chance to get a like new Sustain for a great price, or choose between the Battle or FJ. I will not spend more than $160.

I have never used a Symetre, and am curious how they are. Do you have one?

I own four. One has got to be at least five years old and still going strong. One is newer, and I bought another two last year when they were on sale for $80 at Haddrells. All but one are 4000s, the other is a 3000 on a lighter rod such as the one you have and I really like it. You should give it a shot if you haven’t and compare it to a Stradic. I can’t tell a difference in smoothness at all, weight may be another story. I fish at least twice a week, usually more in the summer and don’t baby my stuff. Other than annual/biannual cleaning and lubing and having to replace the bail arm on the oldest they have held up excellent.

i beat the living crap out of my penn battle 3000’s, ive had one for more then a year and its been rinsed maybe twice in the year and zero corrosion! I own 4 now and zero problems out of any of them

kut, go to wal-mart and get one of those sharp shakespeare spinning reel.

I recently chose between a battle 2000 and similar sized Stradic Ci4 on a custom rod I just built that is a very light high modulus blank for finesse fishing.

The decision came down to the feel of the reel on the rod. Specifically for me I could not get used to the short reel handle (saves weight) on the Ci4. It felt awkward (like it was a toy reel) and I knew I would need the leverage of a longer handle given 30"+ reds are common where I fish.

The Battle has bee terrific so far. It has less drag capability, but for a finesse rod it is more that enough and very smooth.

My CI-4 has already proven well it handles over 30" reds. The week I got it last summer I caught over 5 reds in the 30"+ range back to back. I love that reel. I just really am torn on what to par on this greenwater!

Girlfriend caught a 38in Red two weeks ago just to give a perspective on how much the battle 3000 can handle and that was half drag

I would take the rod to haddrells or the angler and put the reels on it and see which one feels the bests and then make a decision.

I have 3 of the same rods set-up with the stradics. Love the stradics. I also have 10 Symetre’s for charter clients and they are well made and hold up to all size fish. Very easy to repair as well. I have used the Battle as well, but I prefer the Stradic.
