Update May 25, 2010 from NOAA's latest press spin:
Commerce Secretary Gary Locke Announces Fishery Failure Determination in Gulf of Mexico
WASHINGTON – U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke today determined there has been a fishery disaster in the Gulf of Mexico due to the economic impact on commercial and recreational fisheries from the ongoing Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The affected area includes the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
“We are taking this action today because of the potentially significant economic hardship this spill may cause fishermen and the businesses and communities that depend on those fisheries,” Locke said. “The disaster determination will help ensure that the Federal government is in a position to mobilize the full range of assistance that fishermen and fishing communities may need.”
Locke made the determination under Section 312(a) of the Magnuson-Stevens Act. The declaration was made in response to requests from Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour based on the loss of access to many commercial fisheries and the existing and anticipated environmental damage from this unprecedented event.
Since May 2, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has closed a portion of federal waters affected by the spill to commercial and recreational fishing.
This closure area, which is based on the scientific trajectory of the spill, now includes 19 percent of federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico, largely between Louisiana state waters at the mouth of the Mississippi and the waters off Florida’s Pensacola Bay.
“We stand with America’s fishermen, their families and businesses in impacted coastal communities during this challenging time,” Locke said. “Commercial and recreational fishing provides vital jobs
Had in the P & C yesterday about the loop current. They were predicting it hitting Cuba, Bahammas, Gulf Stearm and Possibly our coast… When you go digging for info on it seems that only bits and pieces are being released.
I’d say it will be a little bit before you see any new off shore drilling rigs. Should have stuck to getting what we have on dry land…
The democracy will cease to exist
when you take away from those
who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
The fishing community can not catch a break right now. Sadly this will hurt a lot of industries already struggling to stay above water while the oil companies will just jack the price up.
People seldom realize the impact any mismanagement or ill-advised policy has on recreational fishing and related industry.
The effects of this on America as a whole are huge, yet they’re rarely realized.
Sportsmen are who spend the real time and money in the environment, and they are on the newscasts crying. Sportsmen will lose their livelihoods.
Hardline “environmental groups” are not crying so much right now as they are cheering for an accident that’ll make the country turn against offshore drilling. Meanwhile, they’ll be getting a financial windfall off tar sands oil investments to continue funding their manipulation of environmentalism in America. What a shame.
Chris VerBurg, RFA-SC chapter board member and owner of Charleston Marine, will be on Channel 4 news tonight talking about how this disaster couldn’t have come at a worse time economically and environmentally. He’ll talk about how it’ll affect rec. fishing, rec. fishing businesses and our fisheries. Please tune in. Thanks to Channel 4 for giving this issue the attention it needs.
Also- thanks to Paul Godbout for helping get this on the news for the public to know about it.
I will be offering autographed charlestonmarine stickers to the highest bidders[:0]
all kidding aside, I just happened to be the only one available to due the interview when the news crew was available.
the thanks need to go to Wes, aka phin, and sellsfish
Guys this came on the heals of Obama signing the bill to drill (that he swore he would not support)> do you really think this was an accident. Sorry I call BS, with the US drilling more oil in the US who loses; Obama and his church buds over in the sand. Just saying
