A Lady’s Island man escaped with his life but lost his vehicle Saturday after he was nearly crushed while loading his boat on a trailer.
Deputies were called to Sam’s Point Boat Landing around 11 p.m. where they met with the man who said he became trapped when he tried to load his boat onto a trailer attached to his pickup truck, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Report.
The man said he was at the rear of the trailer making adjustments when the vehicle began to roll backward, trapping him beneath the boat and the dock, the report said.
Nearby fisherman were able to save him, but not the vehicle, which continued to roll and became “fully submerged,” the report said.
By the time deputies arrived, the vehicle could not be seen from land. It was last seen drifting in the water toward the mouth of the river, the report said.
The man declined medical assistance, and no one else was in the vehicle, the report said.
The Sheriff’s Office requested its diving team to come out the next day and retrieve the vehicle, the report said.
Man, that will make you want to check your hand break! Had mine slide backward on an icey ramp years ago after duck hunting, luckely it stopped when the truck tires went in the water.
