I know folly peir is still under construction and will be for a little while but I was wondering what to target for once the weather picks up and exactly when the fish start to get active again? What’s in the surf and off the piers? Thanks!
Early in the mornings, using cut shrimp, just behind the breakers (ie, only 3 feet deep or so) is a great place to start. Get there early before the sun comes up if you can help it.
Redfish, black drum, spots, juvenile spades, pompano— perhaps a sea trout here and there if you have live mudminnows. And fewer toadfish and stingrays (no promises!)
theres several of us that enjoy targeting sharks from the surf. youll need some heavy spinning or casting tackle (your choice) but latching on to a beach monster is always a rush! you can find them in most any good surf spot…just gotta be patient to get a good one.
what i typically do is toss out a rod with shrimp or small pieces of cut fish for whiting and other smaller fish and another heavy rod for sharks/bull reds. if you are fishing along some of the many rock groins in the area maybe toss a jig for some flounder or trout too. oh yea…be ready for some stingrays, pufferfish, and everyones favorite…toadfish!
ha the actual report for that 300lb+ sow is i the hunting reports under “operation bacon” and yes i went hog hunting with the bowie knife again back on subject toss out a variety of baits and just have fun! throwin out a shrimp, piece of crab, and large bait you rarely get skunked but of course it does happen.
