Sorry to sound clueless, but are the troughs under, or before/after the waves?
dparker knows his stuff in the surf, take notes…
Sorry I’m new to surf fishing. How go you recognize a trough
Connor Malark
Notice the waves breaking on the outside over the shallow bar, then closer in the water is flat with a little shore break. The flatness means it’s too deep for the waves to break. Sometime a decent rip will moving through there and you can see it.
Like DP says, cast 10 - 15 feet of the shore at the most.
Fall is coming and it is going light up. Folly is covered in high tide troughs at the moment and lets not forget the west end at lower tides…first dogwood blooms and it’s on!
Dpark I think it’s time for you to start charging folks, excellent advice as usual.

Thanks for the pics. Maybe some red arrows pointing would be easier for some of us newbs. Look forward to using this info on Saturday!

Originally posted by dparker677In all the pics the trough is right there! In between the breakers and the sand. I’ve said this before, don’t let the closeness fool you. Most of those troughs are hip deep or deeper. And yeah, an under hand pitch of a cast.
I assume you’re fishing these the last bit of the falling tide through the turn, and the first few hours of the rising tide?
This is some of the best sharing of info I’ve seen on this site. Nice job guys. I cancelled a jetty trip tomorrow and plan to surf fish instead.

Thanks big time from a senior trying to learn to surf fish. Very helpful.
I got to utilize this info this past weekend. Very helpful!
Hey Dparker I sent you PM earlier. Haven’t been on the site in a while and I just saw this post and boy does it remind me how much of an amateur I really am. Thanks for the excellent info! - Travis

What kind of rig are you using to catch these fish?
