Finally I get to take the kids fishing, I could really use any tips on where to fish or what bait to use. What is in this time of year in Edisto?
200+ views and not a single reply. Either nobody is fishing or they are all too crabby to help out a family with some advice. I am not asking for anyone’s spot, just bait and what’s biting what.

My family just got back from a very good day of fishing. 20+ flounder and 6 slot reds. Last 2hrs of rising tide, white gulp 4" on 1/4 jighead and frozen shrimp on a circle hook Carolina rig. High tide they were hitting on new penny gulp shrimp. About 1 hr later, seemed like grey/white gulp shrimp. 0 hits on trout tricks, I hear great things but I am not personally impressed. I know of a trout spot but have not tried them there yet. After that, nothing was working so I took my sunburned butt home.
Last weekend we were only getting hook ups on mud minnows on a jighead. That combo was deadly on the flounder. Tore them up. Reds were live shrimp under a float with 12-18" of leader. Seemed like artificials were doing nothing. Nothing on cut or whole mullet.

Matt how much vis would you say there was? You need about 18" for the TT to really shine

The water was decent but I have seen clearer. I would say there was 18-24" visibility. I am probably not presenting it correctly but I did have the recommended gamakatsu jig heads which I was told was a must have to make them work correctly. I tried bumping along on the bottom and even some quicker retrieves but no luck. I think a few mullet were hitting it but nothing aggressive for a hook up. I honestly did not have a ton of time personally fishing because I was unhooking and baiting so many for my kids and wife.
I may give them a go tomorrow at the trout hole. I have a big ol honey do list but some can wait.

thanks anyway guys. We made an attempt, but it was cloudy which threw us off some. We started sight fishing up a few usual places and managed to find a school of rays and we did sight some redfish, but did not hookup. The weather held out until about noon and then the wind picked up. The morning was nice and calm, but the bugs were so thick it was like a fog. All in all it was nice to get out with the family, but the bugs and wind got the best of us. maybe next time.

Matt, You have to jerk it up, off the bottom and then let it fall STRAIGHT down. Those bumps you were feeling were probably negative mood trout. Bob

Even with a gig that would be strong. I never got 20 flounder in day in my life, but I usually do not target them. Maybe I should!!

You have to remember there was 4 of us and about 3 hrs of fishing. Even on the Folly I could get 10 in 1 day by myself.
The majority of them were keepers. I know some here will say I am crazy but we only kept the 2 that got gut hooked. I dont like to freeze them because when I moved I had a half of a freezer full of freezer burnt redfish, bsb, trout, etc. I felt horrible throwing them away.
I made a promise to the fish gods that I would only take what I would readily consume and so far the fish gods have been kind to me and my family. I also had a friend who grew up in this area fishing his whole life, but that had nothing to do with it.

This is a good mantra to live by. Personally, I never freeze fish, unless it’s something I can’t readily get (like offshore fish)

The only fish I freeze are the white perch that I take to my step-mom in Florida. She loves fish and Dad’s #1 pastime is golf. I usually start fishing for the perch about two weeks before I have a trip planned. I don’t want any chance of freezer burn. Otherwise, I’m pretty much catch and release, unless I’m ready to fry some up. Doggone, now I’m starting to get hungry… might try for a mess of perch tomorrow.
