4-20 jokes time to fish

Bottom bite was very good in 100 feet of water. Looking at the charter boats in the marina it appears they each have approx. a dozen Dolphin each. The Dolphin are starting to show but no big numbers yet. We saw lots of weeds in 100 feet also.

My old fishing partner lowlandman. Your captain can put you on them. Water was dead from 300-900 feet yesterday for us

I’d post a report but … we went out at 3 AM headed for triple ledge, about 40 miles out overheat horn goes off on port engine. Blew a water pump. Limped back home and made it to the dock at 8 AM.

Side note - replaced lower unit on port engine with a new SEI (as in $1K aftermarket lower unit, not the $3K yamaha foot) foot. Replaced 200 hours/3 years ago. I’ve never had a yamaha water pump fail and certainly not with 200 hours on it.

Left dock at 430 am to a terrible ocean. 1st 30 miles the ride sucked. Then a nice ocean the rest of the day. 9 dolphin. All but two had good size. 1 phin over 30 lb. 1 king. Some bottom critters. 300 - 600 no bites. All fish between ledge and 220.

We caught a few in 200 feet and a one real deep. First 20 miles sucked but then it layed down for the rest of the day

So the aftermarket lower unit uses aftermarket water pump parts?

Your lucky the gearcase didn’t blowup. SEI gear cases are junk.

Glad to hear some people made it out and hooked up. Even though offshore forecast was for south winds the wind was out of the north when we left the dock but heading north towards triple ledge made for a decent ride. By the time we turned around wind was south and in the 0-5 kt range that had been forecast, but as we approached shore wind clocked north again.

Correct, SEI foot uses all SEI parts. SEI sells an aftermarket Yamaha water pump kit as well. I installed a new SEI foot on my starboard engine last September (so both engines now using SEI foot), only about 20 hours on it. I would buy one again but would replace the pump impeller before installing it. In fact I’ll likely replace the impeller in the starboard engine as a preventative measure.

What exactly happened to the water pump? You say “blew,” what does that mean?

Sorry for the questions, just curious what happened.

I’ve seen more blow up than I’ve seen not blow up.

So far I have no complaints about the SEI gearbox but obviously I am not happy with the water pump. Time will of course tell if their long term reliability is good but guessing that they are both going to do well as most failures are “infant death” types of failures and I have 200 hrs on one of them. I am pretty sure both my Yamaha gearboxes suffered an early death (800 hrs on one, 1000 hrs on the other) due to an incident at about the 600 hr mark where engines were running at about 4800 RPM and I had to slam them in reverse in an evasive maneuver.
