When is it too bad to take customers out fishing

I went fishing on the thunderstar yesterday. It was a horrible trip.I would estimate 35-45% of the people on the boat were sea sick. One guy locked himself in the mensroom for over 2 hours blowing chunks. The whole boat stunk. I am guessing ,but I think the waves were 6-8 some 10, big rollers, It was all you could do to stand up to try and fish.It was a waste of $80.00. And yes some people caught some fish. There was 5 of us and we caught 13 small to med. b’liners. The 13 b’liners cost us $400.00 When is it the boat owners responsibility to tell customers this will not be an enjoyable trip.may be even cancel? I trusted the staff there to evaluate the conditions for an enjoyable fishing trip. Forget all the tuff guy stuff. I did not grow up on the ocean but I have never been sea sick. I have to tell you yesterday was stupid to try and fish. I am wondering what the guys in the area think. Is it all about the money? run them out there let them puke ,try to catch a fish bring them back and go smiling to the bank? I felt a little cheated when I returned home last night

Badd trip

Next time you might want to check the weather yourself before you go remember they have to make money. On the otherhand you dont have to go.I would rather loose 80.00 dollars than have a crappy time.Weather forecast # 747-5859 good luck.

its not all about the trip. not every trip is a blue bird day and they are not in it just the money. i know a lot of the regulars on the t star and actually talked to a few of them that went out yeaterday and they said they did well with the fish. this time of year isnt usually much for “tourists” trip(not saying you are at all, no disrespect intended). mostly the regulars and those who really know how to fish that boat are the one’s going out. the forcast was calling for it to be a “doable” day but it kicked up more than the weatherman said. sorry bout your luck but i wouldnt knock the t star off in the future. the owners a great guys who want everyone to have a good time and catch fish but at the same time they are running a seasonal business.

Yeah,
This time of year it is ruff either you go fishing or you stay at home. The T-Star is 110’ of boat. She handles better than many other party boats I have been on because she is also a crew boat. They have also canceled more trips this time of year than they have run. If it was about the money the would go every time there is no gale warning. There are days when the weather is fair and many on the boat get sick. It is crappy that you had a bad experience. But, this time of year you either go when it is ruff or you do not go. I have been out on that boat when it has blown up bigger than it was on Sat. and it fished well. Sorry about your experience. I know those guy at the T-Star and the owners are good people. Call them and hear from their mouth what the deal was.

Sorry it was not a good trip. Nobody can predict the weather, and if they only went when they could feel 99% sure that it’d be a calm day then they’d be out of business.

And if we tried to only go when we knew it would be flat calm to the best of our knowledge, then we’d only fish 2 or 3 days a year.

Once you’re out there… do you turn around? I have been seasick when I was little, and the response I got from granddaddy was that we did not ride for 4 hours and burn all that gas to go home without no fish. So I caught fish. And I don’t get sick so much anymore unless it is very rough and I get a wiff of somebody’s tuna salad or get somebody else’s chunks spray in my face, etc. :face_with_head_bandage::face_with_head_bandage:

Hopefully your trip will be one that gives you lots of stories to talk about for years. It isn’t always about how many fish you caught. :sunglasses:

I doubt there were any 10’ waves. I do know though if you are not used to it 4’-6’ can be uncomfortable even in a large boat.

I fish alot more than you.

Freshwater is for drinking.

I worked on a head boat for two summers in high school and 35-45% of the boat spewing is the norm. The smell of bleach or squid always takes me back. Sorry your trip wasnt what you expected. Did they drop the hook or drift?

Our trip back in sept was canceled by thunderstar due to high seas,so yes they do consider conditions and yes they will cancel due to conditions.

110’ Bote and you were sick? Stay on the lakes and rivers where waves are caused by wind and other boats. Don’t ***** about your little fishing adventure, it is called fishing not catching. By the way, it is December, and you are on the Atlantic. Are you an idiot or do you not realize that that means really uncomfortable conditions may exist. Next time find a pond, stand on the bank, and cast your zebco 33 out with a cork and cricket.

Let me remind you I stated I did not grow up on the ocean and that I have never been sea sick and I didn’t get sick saturday either even though everyone around me was blowing chuncks in my face. Also I asked for local opinion. I just moved here and this was the second trip with these guys first one was great.I wanted to know if this was just bad luck with the weather, did it get worse after we left of if they go out and don’t care about their customers.nothing about the trip was enjoyabled.saltydog 235 what is a bote?? Did you mean boat?? I also asked for any reply to “forget the tuff guy stuff” I guess you can fish from a jon boat in a hurricane right? of course. I am not an idiot nor am I a boat captain.I don’t have experience determining weather patterns ect… I did look on the web sight and I believe i saw 1-2 on one sight and 3-4 on another. And as far as the zebco 33 you can take it and stick it up your salty A**

saltydog you ever been on anything other than your mako? they all rock and roll 110ft or 15ft all the same principals, even aircraft carriers too trust me. dont understand blasting rhynosor. I took an 80 Lazara across to Bimini once though that biotch was going to turn over. But under your thinking because it was 80ft i was just being a *****. For the record a Lazara is a pos.

Having spent some time in the head boat & charter biz - I can tell you that I’ve seen abuses happen. When a struggling fishing biz already has your money in hand - it hurts to see that money flow backwards. On one particular overnight trip on the now defunct Carolina Clipper the weather call was for 5’ to 8’ seas & building. The ride out wasn’t too bad - we were going with the seas. After at least 20 tries to anchor on a ledge it was clear that this trip was a bust. In 6 hours there was not one fish caught. We limped home at 6 kts with the uncovered anchor chain & rope dragging thru the water behind us. All on board were offered rain checks - no refunds.

As a consumer you do have some control in this. Weather info is easily available & if the call is not to your liking you can call & reschedule your trip. On the T Star I’d bag it if the seas were 5 foot or better. To me fishing just isn’t fun if I have to hold on with one arm & fish with the other.

I thought all waves were caused by wind and other boats no matter where you are, of coarse the oceantic waves are not steady boat waves, so that means the waves cause by wind are the only concern out there… what are your thoughts?

Harry Sea. Thats how I roll.

Rhynosor,

Sorry to bust your balls. I reread my reply and it does come off as nasty, I didn’t mean it that way. I must have been in a worse mood than I though this morning. Sorry you had a bad trip. Bote is a boat.

I’ve seen quite a few sick people on the TStar on relatively nice days. Some people don’t know what they’re getting into and spend time below when they shouldn’t, show up hung over, don’t take Dramamine, drink like fish on the ride out, get a noseful of diesel fumes a-la-squid juice etc., etc. Throw in a day of 4-7 footers and that sounds like no fun at all. On the other hand, you’ve got just as many resources as anybody else on the internet to check the forecast and make the call yourself… TStar is in bidness to make money, and if there are enough folks queued up with $80 in their fists, they go fishing, up to a (pretty high) limit.

Think about it - you figure the crew had a great day on your trip?

We showed up for a long-anticipated trip on Aggressor this June, and Mike told us it was 4-7’ and building all day with N winds, and we could go right then and there or reschedule. We chose option B), with my father in law saying we’d rather have memories of fishing, not ‘surviving’. Wise man, he.
