When It Rains It Pours....Need Trailer Tires

I have been getting the boat ready for trip to the Keys in a couple of weeks. This morning I pulled tires off the trailer to install new seals on the hubs and regrease the bearings. Imagine my surprise when I saw a small chunk of rubber missing from the inside sidewall. Upon checking the other as well as the spare, I see the spare has small cracks (dry rot). None of these tires are more than 3 years old but now I am looking at 2 new tires. Man, rubber sure doesn’t last like it used to.

Any suggestions on a brand/place to buy in Columbia. No more Towmaster, I have not had good luck with them.

I made that trip last year and put two brand new tires on and took two spares along with a complete spare hub assembly. Luckily I had no problems going down or coming back up. We did stop and stay overnight at the in-laws place in Melbourne so that did help by not running the whole way in one shot. Good luck on your trip, you going back to Key Largo or somewhere else.

We’re staying on Plantation Key just below KL. We usually leave around 3:00 a.m. and get down there around 2:00 PM. I don’t run hard, just set the cruise and stay in the right lane. This will be our 6th trip. I had one blowout only because truck just in front of m hit something and it kicked over in front of my trailer tire. I have also had to swap out a hub as one was throwing grease all over and I did not trust it to get back to SC. Turns out I was sold the wrong size seals. Dragging a boat that distance all you can do is prepare the bast you can, have spares and hope for the best. It’s worth it having a boat to use everyday.

Just pulled my rig down to Destin fl. for the snapper season and put 6 new tires on the trailer that I got from murphy’s tire in orangeburg. Best price I could find. Around $100 bucks per rubber + mount and balance.

What size tire? Don’t use regular car tires. Learned that the hard way.

Hard to find “trailer tires” that aren’t made in China anymore. The Chinese tires just don’t last.
Sad state of affairs that we are in now-a-days.

Every tire I review online has a bunch of lousy reviews, Goodyears and Carlisles included. I had bad luck with Towmasters so not going there again. Looking at Commodores and Freestars. You are right RDW, can’t find one made in USA anymore. That is what happens when we ship our industry overseas, we get stuck with crap.

check out the trailer parts superstore at easternmarine.com . I have ordered from them 2 times now and saved $$$$$$.

DF , I always take a personal look at the tires before I let them install . I check for the manufacturers date when they were made and where , not that where matters much. Trailer tires sometimes set on the shelf awhile and you might be getting a tire that is 3 years old before it goes on your trailer . I just started using the next size up for the weight rating on the tires .

I also ask to see the tires before getting a new install on my vehicles for the same reason .

Do a search on tire code for more info .

I have been very pleased with Maxxis trailer tires. 3 years and 3 trips to Fl, no problems and wearing very good.

The Maxxis is the only one I find more good reviews than bad. Unfortunately, I can’t find anyone in Columbia that sells them. Once you order them, pay shipping and pay another installer to M&B, the price is pretty high. Going to check a couple other places tomorrow.

I never realized that the state of trailer tires was so bad.

Don’t know what size you have but I found a place online out of Charlotte that had them at a good price. This was through the maxxis webste. Shipping was included in the price. For the good life, it may be worth a bit extra up front.

I had two new radial tires free and free delivery but I couldn’t get his attention. Even tried emailing. Had bought them in febuary for my sons camper but he sold it before I could get them on .Oh well, might not be the right size anyway.
