We spent pretty much all day on the water today, went through probably close to 8 dozen shrimp and came back in with 8 keeper trout (from 15" to 18") and one NICE flounder that just went over 20". Probably had 1 in 10 or 12 trout that were in the slot and had maybe three rat reds along with a couple of small black drum.
We’ve hit about all the holes that we have usually hit the reds on but just haven’t been able to connect on any yet. I did have two hook-ups that I managed to get turned and almost to the boat but both of them broke the leader-no idea what they were but both of them headed “up” the creek rather than towards deeper water which the sharks we have caught always seem to do. (and yes I changed my leader after the second break off!).
Any suggestions??? Not looking for anyone’s secret spots but anything will help. Daughter will be here one more day before she heads back-would sure be nice to see her haul a nice slot red in.
Change tactics? We’ve been using shrimp under popping corks and trolled for awhile today with “electric chickens”(no luck with those?)
We’ve hit about every little creek and inlet around Sam’s Point within putt-putt distance of my old 9.9 Johnson…
Figures…yesterday was the first day we didn’t have any mud minnows in the bait bucket. We were out from about 0900 to 1800 so should have hit something I would have thought even though the majority of that was on the rising tide I guess. Can’t help but think my two break offs weren’t a couple of over slotters.
Right now hitting the mid falling tide would require the girls getting up before the sun…yeah right Neither one of them are “morning people” and it gets even worse on vacation:sunglasses:
Dad the reds are going to be schooled up on the mud flats. This cooler weather will start keeping the fiddler crabs in the sand more and more. Bait in the rivers and creeks will also be getting scarce. This is when the majority of us switch over to artificial baits and do a lot more sight fishing. This is where we have an advantage because we have a good general idea where the schools of fish are going to be. If you don’t have a hot spots map go pick one up. Cruise the mud flats with your little 9.9 and you will see the school lift up boiling/pushing water. It’s ok to spook them cause then u located them. Anchor the boat out QUIETLY and wait. The school will work back towards you. Cast your bait/lure in front of the school in the direction they are working. Good luck!
Thanks xx! There’s a mud flat right out in front of the house that usually produces one or two for us, and a couple of other spots on back up Lucy, but nothing so far. We’ll keep plugging away at 'em. At least we’re still catching fish and having fun which is the name of the game for vacation.
