Where is everybody??

This forum used to be full of frequent posters and useful info. Did ya’ll quit fishing?

I’d say it’s typically slow around here in the winter, but I think it’s more than that.

This forum is running on old software and doesn’t even support a mobile layout. That alone keeps it off the top of my list for checking in. Meanwhile, the social platforms (Instagram, FB, etc) have become the easy way to share a photo of your catch. Unfortunately, many older “message board” style forums like this are suffering the same high attrition with little to no new subscribers. And a message board without activity can suffer a quick death. I spend more time checking THT just because it’s a larger community with consistent activity.

Looking at the “read count” on threads, I’m guessing most of that is robot traffic like search engine crawlers, but I could be wrong. Probably not, though, seeing threads get hundreds of reads with no comments.

The change in technology is continuing, and tiny little things like the system not keeping a user logged in create a disconnect for the new generation of internet surfers.

Just the way of the net. 20 years ago I was on some usenet boards (shoutout to rec.music.phish and rec.music.gdead!) that were at one moment the pinnacle of communication for the subcultures they represented, and within a couple years new technology buried them in the sand.

The good news is the rivers, creeks, and oceans are still out there, and hopefully the warm weather has had everyone on the water instead of at the computer. Speaking of that… bye bye!

Fished the high outgoing yesterday Dan. Not very good. The water was 67 according to my machine and dirty. Did not find any Redfish sight fishing on the high. Did catch a couple on nice ones fishing mud minnows under a cork on the edge of the marsh and back in pockets of the marsh. No concentration of fish. I have not found many schools on the high water all winter this year. Water temp has stayed high and not clear very many days. We did find some nice schools on the lower water but they are in spring time mode and swim from the boat very quickly so you don’t get many casts at them. I have friends that are doing well with Trout fishing deep with slip corks and live shrimp around docks or tree structure. 15 to 20 feet seems to be the magic number.

Danluginbill, I think most folks, especially those of us who live away from the coast, aren’t posting becsuse they aren’t fishing right now. They are getting big projects done to clear the way for the great fishing that arrives in late April, May, and June. I’m saving my scarce fishing $$ for then.

I’m taking advantage of the great outside weather to get all the “honey do’s” out of the way for the Spring Roe Trout season. This warm winter should bring some fantastic fishing this spring, and hopefully a lot of good, informative reports on here.

I’m gonna stick my neck out and say that informative posts like FishingCoach’s above used to be much more numerous. Seems like it is frowned upon these days to give out details of when, where, what tide, techniques, wx, general area, etc. that might help someone new to an area or new to saltwater fishing. Any mention of early season Cobia catches, details of deep hole shrimping or trout areas, specifics on active red flats, etc. will probably not be appreciated on here. Folks don’t want a “fleet” on their favorite fishing hole, and that is understandable.

I’ve learned a ton on this site, just not as much recently. Thanks to those who shared their knowledge in the past.

Thanks, Coach! I am taking my nephew out this weekend, who is down from MN for his Spring break. We will see how we do.

And 67 is crazy warm this early!!!

All things being equal, I would rather be on the water.

Spec and Phish, I think you guys are both spot on.

I’ll keep sharing here because it has helped me in the past, Coach has always been helpful, and I am glad to share what little I learn on my own.

My wife and I had our first kid, I usually and intentionally let work consume me over the winter so come summer time I primed to take days off.

My last post told how, where and when to go catch a tarpon.

This time of year we would start seeing the cobia posts but that probably wont happen this year. BFT/HH was getting 10x the traffic during cobia fishing months.

Spanishking, I have a new grandboy (#2) due in April, so that may slow me down a bit too. I guess there are still some here willing to share their fishing knowledge. Thanks for being one of those!

The great thing about having hundreds of boats chasing cobia is that kept all the boats off my trout holes! I guess the trout will take a beating this year, with all the cobia restrictions. Maybe everyone will go back to fishing off the beaches, now that gas is cheap.

I check these Beaufort threads on a regular basis. I currently live in the Walterboro area and I usually put in at Bennetts Point. I never really see any reports from that area either. Just bought a house on Lady’s Island and will be moving at the end of the month. I’ll be fishing the Beaufort area a lot more in the near future, will report back when I can.
