Where to shrimp

I’m brand new at this and the only place I’ve heard is Bull’s Bay. I read on this forum about shrimping in creeks. Can or will anyone narrow that down a bit? Also some good spots to put the boat in. I’d be coming from Goose Creek.

If you want to shrimp at night, you can shrimp the harbor (Crab Bank, etc.) , Bulls Bay, etc… If you want to shrimp during the day, then Bulls Bay it is. If you have never been to BB, I would recommend going with someone that has or, go real slow your first couple of times. You can find yourself in less than 1’ of water in a skinny minute. Landings for BB would be Buck Hall or Garris Landing. At dead low, you will be plowing up mud and if you draw much water, you will not be able to get to the ICW. For the Harbor, Shem Creek, Remley’s Point, Wappoo Cut.

Someone else will come along with some more info, this will get you started.

The area known as Cowpen, which is just north of Bulls Bay, can be good during the day if the water is dirty or heavily stained. If the water is clear, then shrimping is better at night. You can look at this thread http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=139192 to see an aerial photo of the area. Buckhall landing is the best ramp to get there unless you know someone in McClellanville that can get you access to their ramp. But be forewarned, if you use Alligator Creek, the area at the mouth of the creek where it enters the Cowpen is extremely shallow at mid to low tide. Best to go with someone who knows how to run the area. In the Cowpen, there are hundreds of acres that are less than 1’ deep at low tide. Very easy to get stuck on a mud flat but I have done just as good there during the day with numbers and size shrimp as those who shrimp Bulls Bay. One advantage of this area is that there is generally somewhere to shrimp out of the wind. Other than Cowpen and Bulls Bay, I am not sure where else you can consistently catch good shrimp during the day.

I think DF pretty much summed up all the options. If you have never been in BB the southend is the safest. You can shrimp close to the channel markers. If you go to the northend and leave the creek into the bay…best to go the first time of the year in daylight at lowtide, find the channel, and get a line marked on a GPS (no markers out there). That channel has a tendency to shift some from year to year. Life really sucks when your sitting on a hard sandflat for hours in the middle of the night with rain blowing sideways waiting for the tide(pre-GPS). If you want the bigger shrimp…you have to get out there.

Hey Bowhunter,

How is Casino Creek for getting out to Cowpen Point? It looks like deep water from the ICW and comes out right across from the point. Is that the best way to go at low tide?

Easy way to get to Bulls Bay from the south is take last left in Prices Inlet. Follow bull narrows to south end of the bay. You are getting close when you pass over a shark hole. you can observe a lot of boats in the area and figure out where you want to be next time you go.

How bout this? Try scouting for yourself.

It doesn’t hurt to ask, that’s kind of what CF is all about. Its not like he was asking for GPS coordinates, just general areas.

I haven’t lost my grip. What happened to poeple actualy going out and doing something on their own? Now they get on the net and ask for everything, where are the shrimp? where are the ducks? Where are the fish? And these folks that had people show them where to go and how to do it, now feal it is their job to tell everyone else. It must be some kind of ego thing. Look at me, I know what to do, and where to go.

If you expect me to believe that you have never learned anything about fishing and hunting from someone else, then I have some beach front property that you can have. During our lifetime, everyone learns something from someone else whether it be their family, friends, or some casual acquaintances who are more than happy to share their knowledge. There is nothing wrong with giving people a little information to get them started and letting them figure out the rest. I am more than happy to share what I have learned with anyone including you although I know that with the attitude you have displayed here, you would never ask. Has nothing to do with ego. It has to do with being generous and also with promoting our pastimes. Suppose that you take a child or a "newbie" fishing or hunting and they never catch anything or shoot anything. They will lose interest and quit. What happens to fishing and hunting then? I am not so greedy that I can not share what I know with others. And calling people "idiots" is completely unnecessary.

Terry you have the “luxury” of living in MP and that gives you a huge leg up on lots of folks who live far away and perhaps only get to shrimp once or twice a season. Try sharing your knowledge and you might find something worth more than a good catch.

Couldn’t have said it better myself there Tigerfin. Folks like myself that don’t live in the area don’t have the luxury of “scouting” as making a trip down is not so easy and can be expensive. I came on CF to learn and through the help of several fine folks here have learned a lot and made some good friends. The OP wasn’t asking for anything specific, just some general knowledge.

Don’t share any of your wisdom, keep it all to yourself, good for you. There are plenty of good folks here that are willing to help those that aren’t as knowledgeable as you. God forbid someone take some of your shrimp.

Oh, and why would you call Creekgirl an idiot for putting up a map? Unlike you, she is actually trying to be helpful. Way to make a good first impression there tel.

what can we do to get rid of tel? that duck comment was thrown at me for my post in the general discussion. I live over an hour away from charleston and a trip or three down there to scout is out of the question. SO i figured hey lots of these guys fish I wonder if they see any ducks flyin. Thankfully 99% of people on here are not like this azzhole and are helpful! Hey tel where is the hole you crawled out of? Go get back in it

Can someone not ban this TEl idiot !

If anybody has any good spots to go to w/o a boat at night, feel free to PM me. I’ve tried 6 or 7 spots around the harbor and up the rivers, but nothing crazy good. I did have a decent spot, but it is no longer open at night, which is when I could go.
