My “go to” buoys are 41004, 41008 Grays Reef, 41033 Fripp, and Capers 41029. I have an app on my phone called Live Weather that lets me save these buoys as favorites.
I’ve never been to the jetties or near shore so I don’t know the “exact spot” I’d be going. If I can get a general condition that would/could determine where I’d go.

For the jetties you only need to know velocity/direction of the wind plus tide. If you plan on going beyond the jetties I would look more at the bouys and sail flow.

For the jetties, the NOAA forecast for Charleston Harbor is plenty good enough. If you see anything like 1-2’ seas for the harbor, it’s going to be sloppy at the jetties. Also if the tide is running with the wind it will be pretty calm, but when the tide changes and it’s really ripping against the wind, it’ll stack up in the channel and get real nasty real quick for a small boat. It can be reasonably calm in between the rocks, but when you get ready to come in, it’ll be a whole lot worse than what you realized it was.
sailflow and reefcast are the resources I use. For reefcast, I look for a window of 2ft / 10 sec for 2 or 3 days then plan to go in the middle. This method has been reliable for me in my mosquito fleet boat. Also look at the actual wind speeds prior to going just to be sure
Damm I just go. if its to rough I turn around LOL:smiley:
Way way way too much common sense in that statement. Folks need apps, bouys, noaa, f’casts, and water temps. I mean why would someone think about riding a mile and if thy are getting beat up just turn around and go inshore?
Given the size of my boat, I’m going to need to pick my days wisely so I want to make sure I’m getting the most accurate data for where I’m going.
Isn’t your boat a dolled up aluminum boat?
Not sure what constitutes “dolled up” but yes, it is made of aluminum. Not sure why that’s relevant either but I’m certain you’ll enlighten me.
Every aluminum boat I’ve ever been in has been very light, rides high in the water, and gets slapped around pretty good in chop or small rollers. I’m assuming since your boat is a “bay express” it’s mighty flat bottomed. You can study all the technology you want, but it won’t do you much good until you learn what the water does in different tide/wind combinations. The harbor, mouth of the harbor, and mouth of the jetties are their own animal. It gets snotty. The snot is going to be amplified in an aluminum boat.
This is the webcam to the JIYC. It’s real time and what I look at 90% of the time if I notice its breezy out. I can’t pill it up on my phone though, have to use my computer
It’s actually not flat bottomed at all. The “shallow water” series Xpress (not Bay series) is more of a traditional flat bottom. I understand the capabilities of me and my boat, but thanks anyway.
Thanks for not letting me down, Hoppy. I was waiting for your “you don’t need blah, blah, blah to catch fish” post. I can’t wait for you to post pictures of you in your dug-out canoe (hand dug, of course) hand-lining wahoo on the ledge after having navigated there with only a sextant and the stars. I appreciate you’re confident in your skills and abilities in the saltwater fishing arena but that doesn’t mean you need to go from thread to thread looking for people asking for advice and then contributing nothing but negative comments about the advice given. As has been covered in other threads you’ve contributed to in this manner, it’s not a matter of looking for what I “need” to go out and catch fish. That said, I will arm myself with as much relevant Intel from people I’ve grown to trust here on CF as I possibly can. When making any decision in life, you can’t have enough GOOD information at your disposal. It’s not up to you to determine how much information, data, or INTEL a person needs or can use.
I didn’t ask anyone to tell me what I DON’T need. I started this thread to gather information. People were kind enough to give me some. It’s up to me to figure out which to use, how to use it, and what I need, not you.

Well right now Hoppy’s camera shows the flags standing straight out and the rocking chairs on the dock rocking. I wouldn’t want to be out there in any aluminum boat, GotToGo’s 197 Pioneer, or my 22 ft. Pioneer. I will pick my days carefully, and haven’t been on the big pond in a while now because of uncooperative weathermen. Hopefully soon!
