Which side of the rips in the Broad?

I have always seen boats fishing along the south edge of the rips in the Broad for Cobia- usually in about 15 feet of water. Problem is that the wind has been so strong lately from the south and southeast that there is 3 foot chop on that side. (only caught sharks and rays in 2 trips this week)
Has anyone found success fishing on the NORTH side of the rips in the calmer water?

I would personally get a little deeper than 15 foot. Depending on the stage of the tide. 25ish.

Let me try to explain it. Which side to fish depends entirely on which direction the current is moving. The rips of course are formed by current flowing over the shallower sand bars. Cobia tend to be in the deeper water on the down current edge of the bars, facing up current and waiting for bait to come to them. We usually anchor on the shallow water of the bar, above the visable rip and position the boat so most baits are right in or just past the confused water of the rip.

It’s been too windy to fish Broad River this week when the wind is against the tide. Ugh!

Thanks, Cracker Larry.
I had been wondering if that wasn’t the case- like trout waiting in eddies behind rocks in the streams.
I appreciate your help- I am determined to get my first cobia this year!

Yep. Then Dad with newbie Mom and young Junior pull up just anywhere in the smooth 8’ water 100 yards in front of you and bag a cobia within 30 minutes after you been chumming for hours rocking in the chop.

Junior and Mom were so happy and Dad so proud it made MY day. Take a kid fishing…its good luck! Oh well, that’s fishin’

Second that Larry. Sometimes a lonely chum line gets their attention, as opposed to all the chum in one area. Get ur baits on the right side of the rip and you have a chance. It will be on this week!
